Jack Taylor’s 94th-minute winner for Ipswich at Molineux last Saturday was the straw which broke Gary O’Neil’s back, with the Englishman being relieved of his managerial duties shortly after.
Vitor Pereira is the man tasked with keeping Wolves in the Premier League, but plenty of question marks surround that appointment given the Portuguese has never previously managed in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
On paper, Sunday’s trip to the King Power looks like a decent starting point. However, Leicester were showing real signs of improvement before a heavy 4-0 loss at Newcastle United last Saturday and there are a few reasons to suggest they can bounce back from that shock defeat to spoil Pereira’s welcome party.
Leicester City to win - 31/20
Wolves’ defeat to Ipswich marked their fourth straight loss. Even more worrying is the fact that three of those losses came against fellow strugglers, with Wanderers being beaten 2-1 by West Ham and routed 4-0 by Everton prior to their defeat to the Tractor Boys.
They are a side very much in the doldrums and it is hard to envisage Pereira lifting them out of the relegation zone anytime soon, with there being far too many issues to fix for him to have an immediate impact.
Notably, ahead of this weekend, no side in Europe’s top five leagues had conceded more goals than Wolves’ tally of 40. Their defence is not up to scratch and the fact that Taylor’s goal marked the 14th time they have conceded from a set-piece in the Premier League this term is another big worry.
That weak defence will not hold them in good stead at the King Power against a Leicester side who have netted five goals in their two home matches under Ruud van Nistelrooy, making the Foxes worthy favourites for this clash.
A 4-0 loss at Newcastle was a step backwards, but they did rock up at St James’ Park, which is a notoriously difficult place to go as it is, with none of their first-choice midfield trio available and at least one of those should be back for this visit from Wolves.
A record of two draws and four losses in their previous six visits to the King Power in the Premier League will do nothing to boost an already negative mood in the Wanderers camp and given Leicester have beaten Bournemouth and West Ham and drawn with Brighton within their last five home games, it is difficult to look past a win for the hosts in Sunday’s clash.
Jamie Vardy anytime goalscorer - 13/8
They say age is just a number and nobody is proving that to be more true than Leicester legend Jamie Vardy, who has netted six Premier League goals this term despite being written off time and time again.
The Foxes forward will turn 38 next month but he has shown in the early parts of this season that while ageing can take away a yard of pace, it does not affect a true poacher’s ability to find space and finish with aplomb.
Vardy has scored in three of his last four home matches, including each of the last two, and he is fancied to cause an extremely shaky Wolves defence a world of problems on Sunday.
The Leicester captain has an impressive three goals in his last five appearances against Wolves too, suggesting he could come back to haunt one of his favourite opponents again, making him a worthy favourite and selection in the anytime goalscorer market.
Boubakary Soumare to be booked - 2/1
Boubakary Soumare was one of Leicester’s missing midfield trio at Newcastle but the Frenchman is available again after serving his one-match suspension last weekend.
Wilfried Ndidi is still unavailable, though, and Harry Winks is a doubt. Should the latter not make it, or even if he does and isn’t at 100 per cent fitness, Soumare will have a lot of work to get through in the engine room on Sunday.
His tenacity is what led to his suspension in the first place - he picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in the draw with Brighton - and he may find his name in the book once again.
Soumare has been carded in each of Leicester’s last five home games and, without at least one of his usual midfield teammates, he may be forced into some fouls and a sixth consecutive King Power booking.
