Leicester City v Queens Park Rangers: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Premier League strugglers Leicester City face a tough tie in the FA Cup third round when they host Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

A tough relegation battle looms for the Foxes, who have sunk to second bottom in the top flight after five successive defeats.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side kicked off their 2025 schedule with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa and are positioned two points inside the drop zone.

The outlook appears a lot brighter for QPR, who have moved away from the lower end of the second tier table and might even be thinking about an audacious push towards the play-offs.

Monday’s 2-1 triumph at home to Luton Town lifted the Hoops into 13th place - nine points outside of the bottom three and eight adrift of sixth-placed West Brom.

QPR to qualify - 12/5

QPR have experienced eight FA Cup third-round exits in the last 11 seasons but they approach their trip to Leicester in excellent shape and look overpriced to advance.

The Londoners had a real struggle in the early months of the campaign, winning only one of their opening 16 Championship games.

They propped up the table for periods and were inside the relegation zone at the start of December, but the onset of winter has seen them turn their season around.

Relegation form has given way to a surge up the standings with 21 points accrued from the last 10 fixtures.

With the exception of a 3-0 loss at Swansea on Boxing Day, Marti Cifuentes’s side have been solid at the back.

And their offensive prowess has increased with the returns from injury of attacking midfielder Ilias Chair and striker Michael Frey.

Chair demonstrated his creative qualities by contributing an assist in each of the recent wins at home to Watford (3-1) and Luton (2-1).

QPR are looking decent in both boxes and that will make them dangerous opponents for Leicester, who are on their longest losing run (five games) of the season.

The Foxes were hoping for Van Nistelrooy to steer them to safety but they have struggled since the Dutchman’s appointment, taking four points from eight league matches.

Van Nistelrooy was an FA Cup winner during his playing days at Manchester United, scoring twice in the Red Devils’ 3-0 success over Millwall in the 2004 final.

But his focus at Leicester is on Premier League survival and he may select a team with next week’s home games against Crystal Palace and Fulham at the forefront of his mind.

QPR are not playing again until next Saturday so they appear more likely to go with a first choice team and can reap the rewards by taking a place in the next round.

Michael Frey to score at any time - 3/1

QPR centre-forward Frey has endured an injury-interrupted season but he has returned to fitness in recent weeks and could be the main threat to Leicester.

The 30-year-old has netted in each of the QPR’s last two matches and looks a big price to score against the Foxes.

Sam Field to be carded - 21/10

QPR need to be combative in the centre of the park and will rely heavily on energetic midfielder Sam Field to stem the flow of Leicester attacks.

Field has been carded eight times in the Championship this season and could add to his caution collection.
