After losing 1-0 at Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Inter Milan enter Monday’s Serie A clash at Lazio under some pressure.
Simeone Inzaghi’s rotation backfired against the German champions, while the Nerazzurri went into the weekend sitting third in Serie A.
Inter’s bid to retain their title is, therefore, under scrutiny this week, as they head to a Lazio side fresh from consecutive victories over Napoli. The Biancocelesti also won 3-1 at Ajax on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League so confidence should be high.
Double Chance - Lazio or draw - 7/10
This is a key clash for both sides, with Lazio yet to host any of the teams that started the weekend sitting in the top six of Serie A.
That lack of top sides visiting the Stadio Olimpico does take a little shine off Lazio’s unbeaten home record, while Inter Milan head to the capital with 14 points from their six league trips, but they’ve yet to visit any of Serie A’s top eight teams.
Both sides will be desperate to back up those good records with a significant result given how tight things are at the top of Serie A. However, Inter have hosted four of the top eight and those match-ups haven’t gone entirely to plan.
The champions did beat league leaders Atalanta 4-0 at San Siro, but they drew with both Napoli and Juventus and lost 2-1 to rivals AC Milan.
Lazio are unbeaten across 11 home matches in all competitions, including some tricky European fixtures. They’ve also lost just one of their last five home league meetings with Inter, so the hosts are well-priced to avoid defeat.
Correct Score 1-1 - 11/2
While Lazio are backed for a result, expect it to be a cagey encounter. The hosts have conceded just six times in their seven home matches, while Inter have let in just five in six away trips. The hosts have been high-scoring at home to bottom half teams, but of late they’ve needed to dig in for results.
Lazio have won to nil in visits to Napoli and Monza and they’ve drawn 0-0 with Ludogorets in Europe. They host a Nerazzurri side who have scored more than once in just two of their last seven outings, so both sides may struggle to make an impact going forward.
That doesn’t mean we should write off goals completely, as Inter have been involved in score draws with Juve and Napoli at home, while AC Milan scored late in their 2-1 derby win over Inzaghi’s side.
Inter have also seen both teams score in draws at Genoa and Monza and a 1-1 share of the spoils holds the most appeal on Monday.
Nicolo Rovella and Denzel Dumfries to be booked - 14/1
The last six meetings between these two in Rome have featured a total of 34 bookings and four red cards, so we can expect a physical encounter once again on Monday.
Lazio’s Nicolo Rovella has been cautioned five times already this season, with four of those coming at the Stadio Olimpico. The midfielder is second in terms of fouls for the hosts, behind the suspended Valentin Castellanos. With a fiery encounter expected, Rovella is a good option for a booking.
Denzel Dumfries is expected to feature from the off for Inter and he’s made more fouls per game than any player across both sides. The Dutchman has made only five starts this season but he’s been booked on three occasions in Serie A.
Dumfries has made at least two fouls in four of his last five appearances and after being rested in midweek, he could be worth backing alongside Rovella for a caution in a 14/1 double.
