Kilmarnock v Rangers: Tips, predictions & odds

The Scottish Premiership title race has been a back-and-forth affair this season, with Celtic taking the early initiative and opening up a considerable gap.

Rangers have been a different team since the arrival of new manager Philippe Clement, however, and face Kilmarnock on Wednesday having opened up a two-point gap at the top of the table following a run of eight league wins in a row.

Kilmarnock v Rangers Predictions

Kilmarnock +2 @ 4/6

Rangers looked in real trouble in the Scottish Premiership title race in late September following a 3-1 loss to Aberdeen at home.

However, since then the Gers have won 18 of their last 20 league games, with their only major blip a 2-1 loss to rivals Celtic in late December.

New manager Philippe Clement has turned things around for the Light Blues and they have taken advantage of some slip-ups from Celtic to climb to the top of the table.

Clement’s side do face one of their toughest challenges of the season, however, in this clash when they travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock.

Killie have been one of the big surprise packages in the Scottish top flight this season, currently sitting fourth in the table, and their success has been built on a foundation of rock-solid home form.

Derek McInnes’s men have won eight, drawn four and lost two of their 14 home games this term, and only the two Old Firm clubs have a better record.

Killie were 1-0 winners when these two sides met at Rugby Park in the first game of the season and they also knocked Celtic out of the League Cup on their own patch.

A 2-0 home win over Aberdeen last time out means that Kilmarnock have now been victorious in six of their last eight matches on home soil, drawing the other two, and they can prove a tough nut to crack for Rangers.

McInnes’ men have scored in the last four meetings between these two teams and while Rangers have been in good form recently, five of their last six games have been on home soil.

Their only away fixture in their last six was a 3-0 road win over strugglers St Johnstone while they squeezed past St Mirren 1-0 in their previous away trip before then.

The visitors will also be without Todd Cantwell, who is suffering with a hamstring issue, and he can be a key weapon in their battle to break down stubborn defences.

All in all this should be a real test of Rangers’ title credentials and Kilmarnock are fancied to at the very least run them close.

By taking Kilmarnock with a two-goal headstart on the handicap, the bet will land if the hosts win, draw or lose by one goal.

James Tavernier to score at any time @ 21/10

Rangers’ territorial dominance means that their opponents are often susceptible to giving away penalty kicks.

James Tavernier is the Gers’ nominated penalty taker and has netted nine of them in the league this season from 11 attempts, while he is a real danger from free kicks as well.

The right-back has 12 goals in all from 27 league games, the joint-most of any Light Blues player.

Back Tavernier to get on the scoresheet once more in this game.

Daniel Armstrong to be carded @ 11/4

Daniel Armstrong has been a key component of Kilmarnock’s success this season, netting four goals and registering nine assists.

No Killie player has more goal contributions than the midfielder but he also leads the team in another category.

The 26-year-old has the most yellow cards in Derek McInnes’ squad this season with seven from 27 league games and could be susceptible to picking up another on Wednesday.

Against a dynamic Rangers side, Armstrong will have to focus more on his defensive duties and could well fall foul of the referee as a result.
