Arsenal got back into their stride with a 5-0 win over Brighton in the Women’s Super League on Friday, but their UEFA Women’s Champions League has not been plain sailing so far.
The Gunners have already suffered a 5-2 defeat at German champions Bayern Munich and could be in for a difficult evening in Biella, when they take on Serie A leaders Juventus.
Juventus or draw double chance - 1/1
Arsenal’s season has already been topsy-turvy with Jonas Eidevall departing from the hotseat after losing early ground to Manchester City and Chelsea in the Women’s Super League title race.
Their mixed fortunes have extended into the UEFA Women’s Champions League as they needed a 4-1 win over Norwegian side Valerenga to recover from the shock of a 5-2 defeat at Bayern Munich in their first group game, having battled their way through qualifying to reach the last 16.
Renee Slegers has taken interim charge of the first team but has already said that she does not want to be considered for the full-time role, so it is understandable if the team is in a degree of limbo.
A 5-0 win over Brighton on Friday will have gone a long way towards lifting some of the gloom around the Emirates, but it still remains that a trip to Juventus could prove to be a difficult one.
While the Gunners have had to deal with underwhelming results and managerial changes, the season has been a lot more serene for Juve, who have lost just one game this season, which was also against Bayern Munich.
That puts an extra emphasis on Tuesday’s game as it is likely to have a huge bearing on who is likely to join Bayern in the last eight, and the Serie A leaders are capable of taking something from this meeting.
Juve have kept four successive clean sheets since their sole defeat of the campaign and are four points clear in their domestic table, having dropped just two points - a goalless draw against Inter Milan - from their nine games.
Given the fact Arsenal were defeated 1-0 in the away leg of their qualifier against Hacken - they beat the Swedes 4-0 in the return - then the visitors could still be vulnerable despite the boost of their thumping win over the Seagulls.
Over 2.5 goals - 7/10
There is plenty at stake in this clash and the victors could take a significant step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals, but there could still be plenty of goals.
Arsenal’s last three games in the UEFA Women’s Champions League have generated 16 goals and Juventus are similarly free-scoring, with 11 of their last 13 home matches featuring at least three successful strikes.
The pair shared a 1-1 when they met in Italy two years ago, but there looks a strong chance this match will be a lot more open and over 2.5 goals looks a solid bet.
Juventus to score in the first half - 11/8
With plenty of entertainment in store, it also looks a sensible course to back Juventus to score in the first half with the Serie A side full of confidence following their fine start to the season.
That has happened in 11 of their 13 matches this season - the Bayern defeat and the Inter draw are the exceptions - and they have netted 19 times this term before the interval, so don’t be surprised if they sting the Gunners with a fast start.
