Jamie Vardy holding out for Premier League move amid Championship talk

Following news that Jamie Vardy's chapter at Leicester City will draw to a close following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, reports have emerged that aged 38 he isn't yet ready to make the drop to the Championship.

Joining Championship outfit Leicester in 2012 for a reported £1m fee, few could have imagined the impact that Jamie Vardy has had.

Rumours have started to emerge that Vardy could be set to embark on a new spell in the Championship.

Both Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday were mooted as potential destinations for the England international for entirely different reasons. While a move to the Red Dragons would no doubt be box office given their admirable recent trajectory, Vardy is a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday fan, having emerged through their academy.

Despite continuous talk of a move to a fellow Championship side, Sky Sports News have reported that “Jamie Vardy does not want to play for a Championship club after leaving Leicester and believes he can still contribute to a Premier League team”.

Vardy has scored seven times in England’s top flight in the 2024/25 term, a tally which betters the likes of Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon (6), Liverpool’s Diogo Jota (6) and Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund (4), so it’s little surprise to hear that he believes he’s good enough to contribute.

Should Vardy remain in the Premier League, he will be eyeing up a surge in the all-time Premier League top goalscorer standings, currently placed 15th with 143 goals.

One goal shy of Robin van Persie, three shy of Teddy Sheringham and six shy of Les Ferdinand, extending his stay in the Premier League would epitomise Vardy’s competitive nature and desire to win.

It’s yet to be seen as to whether any existing, or newly promoted, Premier League club would pursue a move for the striker, but with a record as impressive as his, the chances of all 20 sides passing up on the opportunity to sign him appear slim.
