Italy v Albania Prediction, Tips and Odds: Reigning champions to start with a win

Italy begin the defence of their European Championship crown with a Group B clash against Albania, a match they are heavy favourites to win but one which may not be a formality.

Luciano Spalletti's men are rock-solid 2/5 shots against Albania, who are preparing for just their second ever major finals.

It's a tough group also featuring Spain and Croatia so neither Italy nor Albania can afford to slip up in Dortmund.

Draw - Italy Half Time / Full Time - 3/1

Three years ago in Italy's first match at Euro 2020 the Azzurri faced an Eastern European opponent and made hard work of building a lead before winning in some style.

That opponent was Turkey, perceived as a danger but actually nothing of the sort as Italy weathered what they could throw at them, went in at the break 0-0 and then scored three unanswered goals in the second period.

Three years on and there is a similar feel about this weekend's showdown in Dortmund.

This time around it's Albania who are the underdogs and opponents, a potential pitfall if not taken seriously, but the sort of side who Luciano Spalletti's side really ought to see off.

Take them to do it but, as against Turkey, take them do so via the long game by backing the Draw - Italy Half Time/Full Time result at 3/1.

Certainly Albania will set up to be hard to beat. That was the case in qualifying where they impressively topped a group featuring Czech Republic and Poland because they had the best defence in the section.

Serie A stars Elseid Hysaj of Lazio, skipper Berat Gjimshiti of Atalanta and Empoli's Ardian Ismajili were bedrocks of a back four which let in only four goals in eight qualifiers and never more than one goal in any game.

The size of the task facing Italy, therefore, is abundantly clear and if there has been a concern about the Azzurri leading up to the finals, it is where the goals are going to come from.

There is bags of class in players such as Federico Chiesa, Davide Frattesi and Nicolo Barella yet Gianluca Scamacca - seemingly earmarked for the No.9 role - has only ever scored one international goal.

Indeed, not a single member of Spalletti's squad has hit double figures for his country and their final two friendlies - 0-0 against Turkey and 1-0 against Bosnia - merely emphasised where their issues are.

Federico Dimarco Over 0.5 Shots on Target - 6/4

The system deployed by Spalletti means wing-backs Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Federico Dimarco become key players when moving forward.

Both men will be expected to overlap their wingers and also offer another threat around the box.

Certainly it's a role Dimarco has enjoyed playing with Inter Milan this season, chipping in with six goals in all competitions. In Serie A in 2023/24 he has been averaging a healthy 1.7 shots per game.

The 26-year-old has managed two goals for his country in 19 appearances and should become a major threat to Albania if they drop deeper and deeper. He is 6/4 to get at least one shot on target which looks a fair price.

Over 4.5 Cards - 11/10

Felix Zwayer is the man in charge of proceedings in Dortmund and the last time he refereed an Italy match he dished out six yellow cards.

That was last November's 5-2 win over North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifying.

He has taken charge of one international match since then, Ukraine's 2-1 win over Bosnia in a European Championship play-off and he flashed eight yellow cards on that occasion.

The portents are good for at least five cards to be shown between Italy and Albania.
