Israel v Iceland betting tips and predictions

Israel to win @ 13/10

Expect plenty of tension in the air and nerves to be overcome as Israel and Iceland take to the pitch in their biggest games for years.

Israel have only ever once reached a major finals - the 1970 World Cup - while Iceland have done it twice, making the quarter-finals at Euro 2016 and qualifying for the subsequent World Cup in Russia.

They meet in Budapest knowing the victor will have one shot at this summer’s Euros on Tuesday evening against the winner of the qualifier between Bosnia and Ukraine.

Israel should have home advantage for their game with Iceland, however it has been moved to the Szusza Ferenc Stadium in the Hungarian capital. Which was where Israel came from behind to beat Belarus in a group-stage qualifier in June so it’s a venue they know.

Indeed, they looked decent throughout qualifying, finishing just two points behind second-placed Switzerland in the battle for automatic qualification, a campaign that included draws against both the Swiss and group winners Romania.

Iceland, in contrast, had a shocking schedule, not only finishing miles behind the top two - Portugal and Slovakia - but even finishing seven points adrift of third-placed Luxembourg.

Superstars from Euro 2016, the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Aron Gunnarsson and Birkir Bjarnason are no longer around with Sigurdsson furious to have been overlooked by boss Aga Hareide.

Much will depend on the Gudmundsson’s - Albert of Genoa and Johann Berg of Burnley - as Iceland seek to rediscover the magic of Euro 2016.

For Israel, Salzburg’s Oscar Gloukh is one of a handful of youngsters who graduated from their country’s burgeoning age-group programme - last year they reached the semis of both the Under-21 Euros and Under-20 World Cup.

Eran Zahavi to score any time @ 15/8

Israel aren’t overloaded with top strikers and that makes veteran goalscorer Eran Zahavi critical to their chances of beating Iceland.

The physical Icelandics will try to ruffle Israeli feathers but Zahavi, his country’s record scorer, has the nous and skills to avoid any conflict.

And he’s got the scoring record that speaks for itself. Thirty-four goals in 73 international appearances is impressive enough and he arrives in Budapest on a run of eight goals in his last six games for Maccabi Tel Aviv, including two matches against Olympiakos in the Conference League.

Gloukh and Dor Peretz will be banked upon for the service and if Zahavi gets opportunities, back him to deliver.

Over 9 corners @ 6/5

According to the stats at least there is a value bet to be had on corners.

The high stakes leads to a presumption that this showdown will be close and tight, yet throughout qualifying Israel averaged 5.4 corners per game and Iceland 4.6.

There’s a value bet to be had in the corners total reaching ten.

Sverrir Ingason to be booked @ 5/2

Sverrir Ingason seems to be better behaved than the player who picked up 15 yellows and a red card as recently as 2020/21, the red coming for his country against England in a Nations League tie.

But ten yellows - and that red - in 47 caps is impressive enough with five of those yellows coming in friendlies.

He has picked up five yellow cards - and another red - playing for Midtjylland this season in Denmark and looks a fair candidate to crack under the pressure in Budapest.
