Ipswich Town v Newcastle United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Newcastle United head to Portman Road for a Premier League clash on Saturday and are likely to have too much for a struggling Ipswich Town.

Jack Taylor’s 94th-minute winner against Wolves earned the Tractor Boys a much-needed three points last Saturday, although Kieran McKenna’s men still find themselves heading into the weekend two points adrift of safety.

Consistency has been hard to come by for Ipswich in their first Premier League season in over two decades and they face a difficult task in stringing together a run of wins too, with a visit from top-six challengers Newcastle up next.

Consistency has also been an issue for Eddie Howe’s men this term. The Magpies have beaten Arsenal and Chelsea, but also lost to West Ham and Brentford, highlighting their unpredictability.

That makes Saturday’s clash at Portman Road a difficult one to call, although some finer margins narrowly tip the balance in the visitors’ favour.

Newcastle to win - 8/11

Ipswich’s away following have had some real moments to savour this season, from captain Sam Morsy’s last-minute equaliser at Southampton, to a memorable 2-1 win on their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur, to last weekend’s Molineux winner from Taylor.

However, the home faithful are still awaiting a first home win of the season and a first Premier League win at Portman Road since a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in April 2002.

Those waiting fans may have to be a tad more patient, though, with the Magpies likely to provide a stern test this Saturday.

The mood will be high in the Geordie camp following their 3-1 win over Brentford on Wednesday - a result which secured Howe’s men a place in the EFL Cup semi-finals - and their record against promoted sides bodes well for this long trip to Suffolk.

Despite a 28th-minute red card for Fabian Schar, Newcastle beat Southampton 1-0 in their season opener and they routed another promoted side, Leicester City, 4-0 last Saturday.

That result was a real statement given that the Foxes had beaten West Ham and drawn with Brighton in their first two games under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The fact Ipswich have lost their last two home matches - the latter defeat coming due to a post-85th-minute collapse against Bournemouth - is a real worry for their chances on Saturday, as is the absence of Liam Delap.

Delap has netted six of the Tractor Boys’ 16 league goals and he is more than just a goalscorer too.

His willing running and physical approach has caused issues for Premier League centre-backs all season and the forward’s suspension leaves a big hole up front, especially with his deputy, George Hirst, also ruled out.

With no focal point, Town are unlikely to have an out ball should they break up any Newcastle attacks and the continued pressure from the Magpies should see Howe’s men secure all three points at Portman Road.

Jacob Murphy to score or assist - 6/5

Howe’s loyalty to regularly playing Jacob Murphy over the past couple of seasons has often been questioned by Newcastle fans, but the manager’s decision to reinstate the winger into the starting XI in recent weeks has been well and truly vindicated.

Murphy set up both of Newcastle’s goals in the 4-2 defeat at Brentford, before notching a brace of his own in the 4-0 rout of Leicester last Saturday, highlighting his importance to the side.

The winger should again get the nod on the right ahead of Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron at Portman Road and his excellent crossing ability, as well as his eye for goal ,makes him a standout pick in the score or assist market.

That is especially true against an Ipswich side who have managed just one clean sheet this term.

Sam Morsy to be booked - 7/5

Ipswich captain Morsy has been walking a discipline tightrope for some time now, earning his fourth yellow card in the sixth round of Premier League fixtures but somehow avoiding a fifth ever since.

That is not for lack of trying, however, with the Egyptian midfielder committing 14 fouls in the nine subsequent games since his yellow card against Aston Villa - a match in which he certainly could have been sent off as he committed six infringements in that 2-2 draw.

Morsy’s luck may finally run out against Newcastle, though, as he will be tasked with keeping tabs on Bruno Guimaraes, who is the league’s most fouled player.

The Brazilian has been brought down on 58 occasions, at least 20 more than any other player.
