Ipswich Town v Manchester United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Manchester United will have new manager Ruben Amorim in charge for the first time when they head to Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town.

Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford has generated huge interest with onlookers eager to see what he can do to lift the Red Devils from their early-season slumbers.

The Portuguese inherits a mid-table side, although United’s confidence is on the rise after the 3-0 victory at home to Leicester City before the international break.

Ipswich are Amorim's first Premier League opposition and they will be keen to build on their superb 2-1 success at Tottenham a fortnight ago.

The Suffolk side were winless before their north London triumph, which lifted them out of the relegation places.

Ipswich or draw double chance - 5/4

Ipswich head coach Kieran McKenna has been mooted as a potential future United manager and he can ensure a difficult start for Amorim by steering the Tractor Boys to a positive result this weekend.

McKenna’s links to the Old Trafford hotseat are understandable because he was a part of the Red Devils coaching set-up from August 2016 to December 2021.

However, the 38-year-old has spent close to three years in the Town dugout, presiding over their meteoric rise from League One mid-table mediocrity to the riches of the Premier League.

McKenna has retained a few of the players he inherited, including 33-year-old captain Sam Morsy, who is playing some of the best football of his career.

He has also looked to strengthen with every transfer window and must be happy with how some of his key summer signings have settled in.

Liam Delap has made the biggest impact, scoring six goals and working tirelessly for his new team-mates.

Sammie Szmodics has also settled quickly, notching three goals, while Dara O’Shea has slotted seamlessly into the backline.

On the negative side it took Ipswich almost three months to register their first win of the season, but they have competed well in the majority of matches and have avoided defeat on six of 11 occasions.

McKenna’s charges have drawn at home to Fulham (1-1) and Aston Villa (2-2) and those efforts should give them hope of at least matching United, who have been a bottom-half side since late September.

There is talk of a long-term United plan to win the Premier League in the next three seasons, but their more immediate challenge is to break into the top ten.

Change is coming and a switch to Amorim’s favoured three-man defensive set-up may come as soon as this weekend.

However, United’s players may need a bit of time to adjust to the different way of playing and, in the short term, they could go through some choppy waters.

The markets anticipate instant improvement, but United have gone five away games without success and are opposable odds-on shots on the Suffolk coast.

Liam Delap to score anytime - 11/4

Ipswich have scored 12 Premier League goals this season and exactly half of them have come from their star striker, former Manchester City youngster Liam Delap.

The powerful England under-21 international appears to have a very bright future and he looks a tempting 11/4 wager to add to his tally.

Bruno Fernandes to be booked - 11/4

It would be no major surprise if Amorim was to coax more consistent performances out of Bruno Fernandes who, by his own admission, was under par during the early part of the season.

Fernandes will be eager to impress, but his enthusiasm increases the chances of him seeing him name go into referee Anthony Taylor’s notebook.
