Ipswich v Bristol City: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Championship promotion chasers Ipswich returned to the top two after Saturday’s 2-0 success at Plymouth and they will be looking to cement that position with a victory at home to mid-table Bristol City.

The Robins suffered a third straight defeat with their 1-0 weekend reverse at home to Cardiff and may be starting to look nervously over their shoulders at the relegation battle.

Ipswich v Bristol City Predictions

Ipswich-Ipswich double result - 7/5

Ipswich have been fast starters at Portman Road, scoring first half goals in 13 of their 17 home league games, and another lively opening 45 minutes can set them up for a victory over Bristol City at Portman Road.

The Tractor Boys went through a winter wobble, winning only one of nine league games between mid-December and mid-February, and looked to be heading for a place in the play-offs.

However, they have rediscovered the winning habit in recent weeks and approach the Bristol City clash with the intention of claiming a sixth successive maximum.

Kieran McKenna’s side moved back into the top two with Saturday’s 2-0 triumph away to Plymouth and they have a wonderful chance to push on because five of their next eight games are on home soil.

Ipswich had a scare two weeks ago when they needed an injury-time goal to secure a 4-3 victory at home to rock bottom Rotherham, and they will be respectful of Bristol City, who are having a very up and down season.

Liam Manning’s Robins made a reasonable start to the year and moved to within four points of the play-offs after last month’s 3-1 success at home to Southampton.

However, they have lost their last three matches against bottom-half teams and make the trip to Suffolk with fears of getting dragged into the relegation scrap.

City finished the weekend just six points clear of the drop zone and there is the potential for their problems to increase because three of their next four games are against top five teams.

Manning needs a positive result and a performance to ease the mounting pressure but Ipswich will probably tear into his team from the off and they are temptingly priced at 7/5 to lead at the break and go on to win.

Kieffer Moore to score any time - 15/8

Ipswich were pretty patient with their January shopping and the late window loan signing of Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore already looks like a smart piece of business.

The Tractor Boys were left a little depleted up front with George Hirst (hamstring) injured and Dane Scarlett returning to Tottenham, but the addition of Moore has addressed the issue.

Moore is a proven second tier striker with excellent aerial ability and has hit the ground running with five goals in his first seven Ipswich appearances.

The 31-year-old has played a key role in Ipswich’s recent revival and his chances of scoring against Bristol City look strong enough to warrant an any time wager at 15/8.

Sam Morsy to be booked - 2/1

Few players are more familiar with receiving cards than tough tackling Ipswich midfielder Sam Morsy.

The Egyptian international tops the Championship’s yellow card tally this season with 12 in 31 appearances but his regular transgressions are nothing out of the ordinary.

Morsy has reached a double figure tally of cards across five of the last six seasons and there is a possibility of him passing the 15-card threshold and incurring a three-match suspension, to add to the one and two-game bans triggered earlier in the campaign.

The 32-year-old has committed 57 fouls (the highest in the division), which is no great surprise given his combative style of play, which is absolutely key to the way that Ipswich like to play.

Breaking up counter-attacks is a crucial aspect of Morsy’s game and it will be a vital element against Bristol City, who are likely to defend deep and look to play on the break.

Morsy may have to sacrifice himself once again, risking a 13th yellow card and a profit for anyone backing him for a caution at 2/1.
