Wednesday's opening match at the 2025 UEFA Women's European Championships features two sides who qualified for the tournament in glaringly different ways.
Iceland finished second in a tricky qualifying group to reach the summer spectacular, edging out Austria and Poland to be runners-up behind Germany, who they beat 3-0 at home to become the first side since Brazil in 2008 to defeat the Germans by three goals in a competitive game.
Finland, in contrast, had to defeat Montenegro and Scotland in the playoffs to make it to Switzerland but the recent form of the pair suggests the difference between the sides may not be so obvious in Thun.

Five of the 11 games in that miserable run finished level

Iceland come into the tournament opener as odds-on favourites but nothing about their recent form suggests they are in a place to comfortably justify that favouritism. Thorsteinn Halldorsson's side snapped a 10-match winless run by defeating Serbia last time but Finland could provide a sterner test on Wednesday.
Finland, meanwhile, have plenty of momentum behind them, having enjoyed a five-match unbeaten run prior to a narrow 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands, who are fancied by many to be tournament dark horses and were limited to just 1.09 expected goals by the Fins.
Five points from six qualifying matches was not an ideal return for Marko Saloranta's side but draws with the Dutch and Norway during that campaign suggest they may have enough to frustrate Iceland in Thun.
Jamie Griffith explains:
I can't justify backing Iceland at their short price. All three of their games at Euro 2022 finished level and it would be no surprise to see that unwanted trend continue against an in-form Finland side.
Under 2.5 Goals
Sveindis Jonsdottir 1+ shot on target
Eveliina Summanen to be booked
Pays 12/1
With only two of Iceland's last five and two of Finland's last nine outings featuring three or more goals, taking the under looks like a perfect starting point for a Bet Builder.
As goals are likely to come at a premium, looking at shots rather than a goalscorer could be a smart move. Icelandic forward Sveindis Jonsdottir endured a tricky domestic season, scoring only twice in 19 Bundesliga games, but she warmed up for this tournament by netting two times in three games for the national team and should cause Finland some problems.
Round out the Bet Builder by backing combative Tottenham midfielder Eveliina Summanen to pick up a card. The feisty Fin was booked five times in 17 WSL games last term and may fall foul of the referee.

Jamie Griffith adds:
These Scandinavian rivals will take their time sussing each other out and I'm not expecting many goals. Sveindis Jonsdottir is a real threat, though, and her pace should ask the Finnish defence plenty of questions. Spurs battler Evelina Summanen loves a tackle and, with pride on the line, she rates a solid card candidate.

Iceland coach Halldorsson has switched between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 recently. He may choose to stick with the more solid base the latter provides for this opener, with goal-threat Jonsdottir set to start up front.
Keep an eye on Jonsdottir's long throw-ins, too, as they may also prove a solid route to goal for the favourites.
(4-3-3): Runarsdottir; Arnadottir, Viggosdottir, Sigurdardottir, Arnardottir; Johannsdottir, Vilhjalmsdottir, Antonsdottir; Albertsdottir, Johnsdottir, Albertdottir
An interesting tactical battle could be on the cards as Finland, who usually play in a 4-4-2, may be forced to switch their formation if they endure a slow start in Thun.
A strong WSL contingent includes Sumannen as well as West Ham's Oona Siren and Crystal Palace's Ria Oling, while all-time top scorer Linda Sallstrom will lead the Finnish line.
(4-4-2): Koivunen; Lehtola, Kuikka, Nystrom, E Koivisto; O Siren, Summanen, Oling, Kosola; Franssi, Sallstrom
