Hungary v Switzerland Prediction, Tips and Odds: Hungary backed to win in Cologne

Group A hopefuls Hungary and Switzerland square off in what should be a keenly-contested showdown in Cologne.

Hungary impressed in qualifying, going unbeaten, and the Magyars are likely to be full of confidence as they prepare to kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against a Swiss side who have drawn seven of their last 11 matches.

Hungary are 23/10 to win, Switzerland are 5/4 for the victory and a draw is 9/4.

Hungary to win - 23/10

Hungary failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, but since then have caught the eye on the international stage and head into the tournament as worthy candidates to go far in Germany.

Their 14-game unbeaten run was finally ended somewhat surprisingly by Republic of Ireland in a warm-up game in Dublin last week, but they put that defeat behind them quickly - seeing off Iceland 3-0 in their final preparation match.

Marco Rossi has a host of talented players at his disposal, including Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez and forward pair Roland Sallai and Barnabas Varga, who have impressed for Freiburg and Ferencvaros respectively.

Switzerland are a seasoned tournament outfit, having reached the round of 16 in the last three World Cups and going as far as the quarter-finals in Euro 2020, when they were knocked out by Spain only on penalties.

However, they look to be lacking the firepower to make a real impression in Group A and are likely to rely on their strong defence to keep teams out.

The Swiss are draw specialists, with seven draws in their last 11 matches underlining their defensive mindset and they will make it difficult for Hungary to break them down in Cologne.

The Magyars should have enough creativity, though, to edge what is expected to be a tight Group A clash.

Barnabas Varga to score anytime - 7/2

Varga comes into the tournament on the back of a fine club season with Ferencvaros, for whom he netted 29 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions.

The 29-year-old is set to lead the line for Hungary in their group opener and he should get decent service from Szoboszlai in midfield, while Sallai is tipped to drop slightly deeper to leave more space for Varga to thrive in the final third.

Varga scored four times in qualifying and then grabbed a brace in the final warm-up victory over Iceland to take his tally to six for Hungary from just 11 caps.

He is bang in form and at 7/2 to score anytime, the Ferencvaros forward looks a good option in the goalscorer market.

Milos Kerkez to have over 0.5 shots on target - 7/2

Kerkez has just enjoyed a good campaign for Bournemouth in the Premier League and is set to be one of Hungary’s key players in the Euros.

The 20-year-old did not score for the Cherries in 2023-24, but towards the end of the campaign began to make more of an impact attacking-wise, attempting eight shots, of which three were on target, in his last six appearances for the club.

If he gets the opportunity of a sight of goal against the Swiss then he will be confident of trying his luck and he has the talent to trouble goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
