Hull City v Middlesbrough: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Middlesbrough are once again in the picture for the Championship play-off places and Michael Carrick’s side will be looking to keep the pace with their top-six competitors when they face Hull FC at MKM Stadium on New Year’s Day.

It has been a somewhat frustrating spell for Boro over the Christmas period as they were unable to build on a 1-0 win over Millwall in mid-December.

Since that victory over the Lions, Carrick’s men have been held to three draws against Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Burnley.

With six points dropped in that time, teams below have made ground on Boro but Wednesday provides an opportunity to get back to winning ways against an inconsistent Hull City side.

Hull City v Middlesbrough betting tips and predictions

Middlesbrough to win and both teams to score - 10/3

One of the better teams in the Championship when it comes to style of play, Boro’s recent results have not matched up to some of the football they can put on the field.

With one win in their last six game but still sat in sixth place in the Championship standings, Middlesbrough might well be wondering about points dropped and where they could be on the ladder had some of those results gone their way.

That’s in the past and now they can only focus on their next game against Hull, who Boro have only lost to once in their last five meetings.

These sides met at the Riverside earlier this season back in November and it was Boro who ran out 3-1 winners.

A similar scoreline might well be on the cards on New Year’s Day, with all of the last five meetings between these sides ending with both teams getting on the scoresheet.

Boro are unbeaten on their last two visits to MKM Stadium and Carrick’s side look like they have the power to overcome the Tigers, even if Hull do get on the scoresheet once again on Wednesday.

Finn Azaz anytime goalscorer - 9/4

Scoring in that last encounter between these sides in November, look to Finn Azaz to strike again against the Tigers this week.

Azaz appears to have a liking for this fixture against Hull, having also scored in their meeting last season at MKM Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland international also comes into this game in hot form, after bagging a brace in Boro’s 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day.

With eight Championship goals to his name this season, look to Azaz to add to his goal collection against the Tigers in this one.

Lewie Coyle to be booked - 7/2

Hull’s club captain Lewie Coyle could be set for a busy afternoon against a pacy Boro attack and it would be little surprise to see the right-back booked on Wednesday.

The former Leeds United defender already has five yellow cards to his name in the Championship this season, with only team-mate Charlie Hughes booked more for the Tigers so far this campaign.

Coyle also seems to have a record of picking up yellow cards in clashes against Middlesbrough, with the 29-year-old defender booked in their meeting earlier this season and also against Boro at the Riverside last term.

Despite any New Year’s resolutions Coyle might have, old habits die hard and he’s good value to land another yellow card against Carrick’s men here.
