Neil Critchley has turned around Hearts' fortunes since taking over as manager, but now faces the toughest challenge of his short reign as his side host Heidenheim at Tynecastle in the UEFA Conference League.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals - 5/4
Hearts and Heidenheim have won all six of their combined UEFA Conference League matches this season, so at least one team is set to lose their perfect record when these two face off at Tynecastle.
The German visitors beat Hacken home and away in the qualifiers for this competition before getting the better of Olimpia in a 2-1 win and Pafos by a scoreline of 1-0 in their two matches in the group stage of the tournament.
Their success in the UEFA Conference League has been in sharp contrast with their recent domestic form. They have lost four and drawn one of their last five matches in the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga.
They have had a fast rise in recent years and the pressure of their European campaign may have caused issues in their domestic form.
They have also been leaky at the back recently, conceding 25 goals in all competitions this season and keeping just two clean sheets.
Hearts have also had their issues however, starting the season with one draw and seven defeats from eight games in the Scottish top-flight and Europe.
That saw Steven Naismith depart as boss and Critchley take over the reins and he has guided his new team to three wins, a draw and a defeat from five outings.
The Jam Tarts have netted 10 goals in those five matches and have won both of their UEFA Conference League games this term, beating Dinamo Minsk and Omonia in their two outings.
The home team have clearly improved from an underwhelming start to the campaign and could play their part in a high-scoring match here.
Both teams have found the net in seven of the last nine games involving the home team and over 2.5 goals has also landed in seven of their last nine matches. Combining both of those selections may be the best way to approach this game.
The struggles of the away team at the back mean that this could well develop into an entertaining affair.
Heidenheim to win - 19/20
While the main selection is for a high-scoring game, keeping the visitors on side may also be shrewd.
Despite their recent issues domestically, Heidenheim have won all four of their UEFA Conference League matches this term.
Perhaps most concerning for Hearts this season has been their inability to get star striker Lawrence Shankland firing after he topped the Scottish Premiership scoring charts last term.
The Scotland international has just one goal in all competitions in 2024/25 and perhaps the fervent transfer speculation surrounding him has caused a downturn in his form.
With the home side struggling to get their star man in the goals, Heidenheim could make their class tell in the Scottish capital.
Paul Wanner to score at any time - 10/3
Paul Wanner has already had plenty of scrutiny in his young career, becoming the youngest player in Bayern Munich’s history when he made his debut in 2022.
Since then he has gone on loan to Heidenheim, where he has made an eye-catching start.
He has already scored four goals in all competitions and he could be the value selection to get on the scoresheet here.
Wanner is one of the visitors’ options as a penalty taker and may be able to make his mark in this game.
