Manchester City Women suffered their first defeat of the season at Chelsea on Saturday, but they will be confident that they can bounce back against Hammarby Women, who they beat 2-0 at home in a UEFA Women’s Champions League game last week.
However, the Swedish outfit defended resolutely in the opening 45 minutes and could find the net after four successive home victories, including a 2-0 success over Austrian side St Polten in the top European competition.
Manchester City to win & both teams to score - 7/5
Manchester City’s run of 11 successive wins came to an end at Stamford Bridge on Saturday when they fell to a 2-0 loss to Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, but they have been handed a good opportunity to get back on track with a UEFA Women’s Champions League tie against Hammarby.
City beat the Swedish outfit 2-0 last week when a hefty win was expected on a similar scale to Barcelona’s 9-0 win over the same opponents, but Hammarby made life difficult for City by holding them to a goalless first half.
The home side have not been in action since as the Swedish season is over - they finished third - but they have won their last four home games without conceding, a run that included a 2-0 success over Austrian outfit St Polten in this competition.
This is a huge step up in class compared to those outings, but City were given a bit of a fright against St Polten as they recovered from 2-1 down to win 3-2 as manager Gareth Taylor brought on big guns Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord to get the job done.
There is hope for the hosts that they can find the net as City have kept just two clean sheets in six away matches this term and Hammarby achieved a notable result in the qualifying rounds by beating Portuguese champions Benfica over two legs.
City’s clash should tell in the end, but it would not be a surprise if both teams scored.
Aoba Fujino to score at any time - 6/4
While Shaw is the most feared striker in the WSL, Taylor has chopped and changed his line-up in the UEFA Women’s Champions League so far this season and some of his fringe players have made a big impression.
One who has been able to flourish in their last couple of games in the competition has been Japanese forward Aoba Fujino, who has the ability to operate on either flank.
The 20-year-old’s versatility has been an asset on their European adventures and the recent signing has responded well to the faith put in her by her manager.
She has had nine efforts on goal in their last two games against St Polten and Wednesday’s opponents and scored on both occasions, so take a chance on her finding the net in a third successive group game.
Second half to be Manchester City’s highest scoring half - 20/21
It would not be a big surprise if City turned on the gas after the break, particularly if Hammarby look to adopt the same tactics as they did in Manchester last week.
The Citizens’ two goals in that victory both arrived after the break and Taylor’s team have scored more goals in the first half than second half in just two of their 13 matches this season.
They have notched more goals after the interval than before the break in five of their last seven matches and that could be a trend that continues on Thursday night.
