Halifax v Chesterfield: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Chesterfield can seal the National League title with a point or more when they head to Halifax on Wednesday evening.

The Spireites have set the pace all season, and a draw will put them beyond Barnet's reach with six games still to play.

In their way stand a resurgent Halifax side who know a victory will take them into the play-off places.

The Shaymen have recovered from a six-match winless streak to record victories in six of their last seven, most recently triumphing 2-0 at Oxford City on Sunday.

This fixture has already been postponed twice but despite more rain being forecast, should get the go-ahead.

With both sides in the ascendency, Wednesday's game could be a classic, but the feeling is that it could be a memorable evening for a healthy travelling contingent.

Halifax v Chesterfield betting tips and predictions

Chesterfield to win and both teams to score @ 3/1

Chesterfield were the best of the rest last season, albeit some distance behind the top two of Wrexham and Notts County. However, other clubs' fans still suggested that 2023/24 may have been more competitive if the Spireites had also been promoted.

Paul Cook's side came agonisingly close to beating County at Wembley, eventually succumbing on penalties, but responded by starting the season with three victories and have never really looked back.

They have won 29 of their 39 matches and have been entertaining along the way, scoring 95 times - 23 more than any other team - but also conceded a fairly mediocre 51.

In-form Town will be looking to exploit those defensive lapses and have cause for optimism following their recent run that has brought them right back into the postseason picture.

Chris Millington's side may not be as prolific, but have netted in eight of their last nine and can test their visitors.

It is a case of when, not if, Chesterfield are promoted and a result on Wednesday allows them to celebrate on Saturday when they welcome Boreham Wood to the SMH Group Stadium.

The Spireites may have won just one of their last four on the road, but with 3000 fans set to make the journey, Cook will be desperate to see his team get the job done at the first time of asking.

Will Grigg Anytime Goalscorer @ 6/4

Cook rotated for Saturday's 2-2 draw at Oldham and is likely to shuffle his pack again, with Will Grigg among the candidates to come back in.

The 32-year-old may not be as sharp as he once was, but his goals this term suggest he is still playing below his level.

Grigg scored the opener in September's reverse game, a 3-2 home victory and is 4/1 to repeat that feat as first goalscorer.

The former Wigan, Sunderland and MK Dons man is second only to Eastleigh's Paul McCallum in the scoring charts and, while he is tempting to back to break the deadlock, it is encouraging to see him the right side of Evens to net at any time and that price is worth taking on.

Over 6.5 Corners @ 6/5

Corners could well be a feature of Wednesday's game, with double-figures a real possibility.

The Shaymen's last four home games have featured 10 or more corners and they have no shame in putting opposition defences under pressure with balls into the box.

That angle is worth following, especially with Chesterfield also likely to be on the charge when attacking their own fans.

A goal from a set-piece could lead to epic celebrations, so corners could be a factor.
