The Serie A title race could remarkably be decided by a play-off between Inter and Napoli after the Nerazzurri slipped up away at Bologna.
A 94th-minute winner from Riccardo Orsolini handed Bologna a surprise 1-0 home victory over Inter, meaning Simone Inzaghi’s side remain level with Napoli on points at the top of the Serie A table.
Inter and Napoli now face a five-match run-in to determine which team claim the Scudetto in 2024/25.
Should they remain level on points following these five matches, Inter and Napoli will contest a one-off play-off to decide the league winners, held at the home of the team with the superior goal difference.
As things stand, Inter have a 13-goal advantage over Napoli in the table.
Should the play-off end all square after 90 minutes, the Scudetto will be decided by a penalty shootout.
The Serie A title has only once been determined by a play-off, with Inter succumbing 2-0 to Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in 1964 after the two teams had finished the league season level on points.
Despite their slip up in Bologna, Inter boss Inzaghi cast a defiant figure, telling DAZN after the match:
Our championship does not end here.
Both of the Serie A meetings between Inter and Napoli this season have finished in draws.
The first clash between the pair came back at the San Siro in November 2024, with a long range effort from Inter’s Hakan Cahlanoglu cancelling out an opener from Scott McTominay in a 1-1 draw.
The return meeting at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona ended with the same scoreline, with Philip Billing netting a late equaliser for Napoli after Federico Dimarco made the breakthrough with a terrific free kick.
