Germany v Ukraine: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Germany have been scoring and conceding plenty of goals in the build-up to Euro 2024 and that trend should continue in Monday's clash with Ukraine.

Germany are 11/2 to win Euro 2024 and the tournament hosts will be fine-tuning their tactics in Monday's international friendly against Ukraine, who qualified for the finals thanks to a couple of dramatic playoff victories.

Over 3.5 goals - 5/4

Germany's last competitive fixture was a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup, where Die Mannschaft suffered a shock group-stage exit.

As Euro 2024 hosts, they were not required to qualify for the finals so they have been playing friendly matches over the past 18 months, with mixed results.

A 4-1 loss to Japan in September 2023 signalled the end of Hansi Flick's time as national-team manager and his successor Julian Nagelsmann has overseen three wins, two defeats and a draw in his first six matches.

One of Flick's last games in charge was a 3-3 friendly draw with Ukraine in June 2023, when Germany needed a late Joshua Kimmich penalty to avoid defeat.

The teams also drew 3-3 in a 2011 friendly and backing over 3.5 goals looks a solid bet in Nuremberg on Monday night.

Germany are missing a couple of key centre-backs as Real Madrid's Antonio Rudiger and Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck were involved in Saturday's Champions League final – as was Ukraine's first-choice goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

But Nagelsmann should be able to unleash an in-form front four featuring Arsenal's Kai Havertz, Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz and Bayern Munich duo Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala.

Germany have scored at least twice in six of their seven matches since Flick's departure – Rudi Voller took charge of Die Mannschaft for one game prior to Nagelsmann's appointment – and Ukraine's recent internationals have also been entertaining affairs.

They beat Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland 2-1 in March's playoffs, scoring late winners in both games, and both teams have found the net in seven of their last 10 matches.

Kai Havertz to be first goalscorer - 9/2

Kai Havertz is expected to lead the line for Germany at the Euros following an impressive second half of the season in a similar role for Arsenal.

Havertz scored twice in just 103 minutes of football at the 2022 World Cup and bagged nine goals in his last 14 Premier League starts for the Gunners in 2023/24.

He racked up nine shots in Arsenal's final game of the season against Everton, scoring a late winner, and should be backed to break the deadlock in Nuremberg.

Havertz scored the second goal in the 2-0 win over France in March, also finding the net in last year's 3-3 draw with Ukraine, and he is heading into the Euros in fine form. 

Artem Dovbyk to have over 2.5 shots - 10/11

A hat-trick against Granada fired Girona's Artem Dovbyk to the Golden Boot in La Liga and the Ukraine striker poses a serious threat to the Germany defence.

Dovbyk had a wonderful campaign for the surprise third-placed finishers in Spain and he is a tempting bet to have over 2.5 shots in what should be an open game on Monday.

The forward scored 10 times in his last nine La Liga starts, including goals against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and also struck an 88th-minute winner for Ukraine in their playoff semi-final against Bosnia.

Dovbyk had 29 attempts at goal in his last 10 league appearances in 2023/24 and he should get more chances against a Germany side who are far from secure at the back, especially with Rudiger unavailable.
