Germany v Scotland Prediction, Tips and Odds: Hosts to win opener

Germany are approaching Euro 2024 with high expectations after their recent resurgence under Julian Nagelsmann.

Scotland are through to the finals for the fourth time and their main focus will be on striving to advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.

An entertaining, high-scoring game is anticipated by the Racing Post's Dan Childs, who has picked out his three best bets for the Munich encounter.

Germany are 2/7 to kick off with a victory. The draw is priced up at 5/1 and a Scotland win is a 8/1 chance.

Bet Builder - Germany and over 3.5 goals - 51/20

Germany lost their opening match at the last three major tournaments but they can give their Euro 2024 challenge an immediate boost by registering a high-scoring victory over Scotland in Munich.

The last time a sole tournament host won the European Championship was back in 1984 when a Michel Platini-inspired France team overcame Spain 2-0 in the final at the Parc des Princes.

However, it should be a major advantage for Germany to play all of their matches on home soil as long as they can excite the fans by making a strong start to the tournament.

Germany have not played competitive football since bowing out at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Their fortunes continued to nosedive in 2023 and a three-game losing sequence signalled the end for head coach Hansi Flick, who was dismissed in the aftermath of last September’s 4-1 loss at home to Japan.

At that stage there would not have been many Germany supporters looking forward to Euro 2024, but their mood has changed thanks to Flick’s replacement, Julian Nagelsmann, who has presided over a remarkable turnaround.

Nagelsmann’s side are unbeaten in four matches this year which have included impressive victories away to France (2-0) and at home to the Netherlands (2-1).

Confidence is growing and Nagelsmann’s high tempo, attacking approach is sure to ask some searching questions of the Scots, who seem to have lost the winning habit.

Scotland flew out of the traps in qualifying with five straight wins but they limped over the line, taking two points from the final three matches.

They have also struggled in friendlies, claiming only one victory (a 2-0 success over Gibraltar) in the last nine.

And their preparations for the Euros have been hampered by injuries with centre-forward Lyndon Dykes and right backs Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson unable to make the squad.

Steve Clarke’s side have suffered heavy friendly defeats away to France (1-4) and the Netherlands (0-4) over the last eight months and another high-scoring loss looks probable in Bavaria.

Kai Havertz to score any time - 8/5

Kai Havertz was Germany’s top scorer at Euro 2020 with two goals but he could have an even bigger role this summer and can make a strong start by scoring against Scotland.

Versatility is one of Havertz’s great strengths and was one of the reasons Arsenal were prepared to pay Chelsea a reported £60million for his services last summer.

He has played in a variety of positions for the Gunners and contributed greatly, delivering 13 Premier League goals and seven assists.

However, he generally plays as a centre-forward for Germany and has been among the goals, scoring in the victories over France (2-0) and Greece (2-1).

Havertz has the tools to be Germany’s leading marksman this summer and he looks a solid 8/5 shot to notch in the opening match.

Billy Gilmour to be booked - 4/1

Brighton’s Billy Gilmour was carded the most times in league games for his club this season - receiving eight yellows and one red - and he could enter referee Clement Turpin’s notebook in the Euro 2024 opener.

The 23-year-old Scotland midfielder likes to get on the ball and create but he will have to get through plenty of defensive work and looks a worthwhile wager for a booking at 4/1.
