Georgia v Portugal Prediction, Tips and Odds: Jota to shine in Gelsenkirchen

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez is set to ring the changes and with their bit-part players looking to make a big impression and their opponents desperate to win, that should ensure plenty of entertainment when they meet Georgia in Gelsenkirchen.

Over 3.5 goals - 11/8

The first two rounds of Euro 2024 fixtures in Group F have gone the way many observers would have predicted and Georgia and Portugal head to Gelsenkirchen with very different priorities for their final pool match on Wednesday.

For the Portuguese, the hard work has been done. Victories over the Czech Republic and Turkey mean Martinez’s side are guaranteed to finish top of the section and the former Everton and Belgium boss has said he will make a host of changes to give some of his stars a rest.

Georgia’s situation is entirely different as, having collected just one point from their opening two outings, they have to get a win to claim a place in the last 16 in their first major tournament.

On the evidence of their first two games, particularly a stirring 3-1 defeat to Turkey where they were banging at the door for an equaliser right up until the final seconds before being left exposed at the back, they will again be going all out for the win.

While that means they should create chances, Portugal can take advantage just as Turkey did and there will be no shortage of players looking to force their way into Martinez’s plans for the knockout stage.

The Selecao have scored at least twice in 10 of their last 12 matches and there is potential for plenty of gaps for them to exploit and with Georgia also having the potential to net against an unfamiliar Portuguese backline, it is worth chancing that there will be more than three goals.

Diogo Jota to score at any time - 7/5

Martinez has already said he will be taking the sensible option and making changes for the final group game, but such is the strength of the squad he has taken to Germany, it may not make a great deal of difference.

Places could still be up for grabs in the line-up for their last-16 outing and one who will be particularly keen to force his way into the equation is Liverpool’s Diogo Jota.

He can consider himself unfortunate not to have started either of Portugal’s games and he made a strong impression in the 2-1 win over the Czech Republic, when he was unfortunate to have a goal ruled out for offside after entering the fray as a substitute.

He scored 10 league goals for the Reds last season and has 14 in 39 international appearances, and with chances likely to come his way, it would not be a surprise if he converted one.

Over 9.5 corners - 5/6

Portugal’s corners statistics have been quite unusual in their opening two games as while they have forced a total of 14, 13 of them came in their opening game against the Czechs.

Nevertheless they allowed Turkey nine in a one-sided game on Saturday and we should expect there to be over 9.5 in Thursday’s match, particularly as Georgia will be pushing forward in desperate search of a vital win and are highly likely to pose a considerable threat from set-pieces.
