France v Germany: Prediction, Tips and Odds

France welcome Euro 2024 hosts Germany to Lyon for a friendly international which is likely to show just where both sides stand in the pecking order for potential glory in the summer.

Les Bleus are the form team with eight wins in 10 games since losing out to Argentina in the World Cup final in 2022.

The Germans are still a work in progress under Julian Nagelsmann, but they did manage to claim a 2-1 victory over their opponents when the two sides last met in September of last year.

France v Germany betting tips and predictions

France to win and both teams to score - 5/2

Germany may have won the last meeting between these two sides, but that game took place on home soil and with that advantage now on their side, France should be able to take their revenge here.

Didier Deschamps has a settled team and the only notable omission here is injury victim Antoine Griezmann, while counterpart Nagelsmann is still trying to decide his best set-up as he gears up for a fifth match in charge.

The former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich boss has two defeats and just one win from his first four games in the hotseat, so this trip to France looks a tall order for an experimental line-up, who are without a host of regulars - including Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka.

And Nagelsmann has made plenty of changes after a disappointing defeat to Austria in the last batch of international games.

As such, a win for France should be expected here but Germany can at least get on the scoresheet in what could be a fairly open encounter.

After losing out in the World Cup final to Argentina, France embarked on a five-game winning run in Euro 2024 qualifiers and they managed clean sheets in all of those victories.

However, they have just one shut-out in their last five games and that came against minnows Gibraltar, while the Germans have only failed to score in one of their last six games.

Both managers will make changes to their sides on Saturday to give their players minutes ahead of the tournament this summer, and that should in turn lead to a more open game - so a France win with goals at both ends looks a strong play in this friendly encounter.

Toni Kroos to score anytime - 11/1

France superstar Kylian Mbappe is the clear standout pick for an anytime goal as he has 53 goals in 83 games for his country, nine of which came in eight Euro 2024 qualifiers, and he heads into the game in fine form with six goals in his last four games for PSG.

However, anyone looking for an outside option to score in Lyon could be tempted by Mbappe’s soon-to-be Real Madrid team-mate Toni Kroos, after he ended his international retirement.

Kroos last featured for his country at Euro 2020 after some heavy criticism from some of the big names in the German game, such as Lothar Matthäus, but is back in the fold following a request from Nagelsmann.

The 34-year-old has a solid scoring record for his country with 17 goals in 101 appearances and he’s been getting some chances for Real in La Liga, averaging 1.2 shots-per-game, so he looks an interesting big price option to grab a goal as he returns to the German set-up.

Aurelien Tchouameni to be booked - 5/1

France’s Aurelien Tchouameni looks a value pick in the player to be booked market, particularly if this game does become a midfield battle at times.

Tchouameni has featured both in defence and in a holding role for club side Real Madrid this season and he was booked the last time he played in the latter position, in the 1-1 Champions League draw with RB Leipzig.

The 24-year-old has five bookings in 24 league games for Los Blancos this term and also picked up two yellow cards in five Champions League appearances.

Tchouameni averaged 1.2 fouls per game for France during qualifying and picked up one yellow card in the process, while he was also booked during the 2022 World Cup, so there is a reasonable chance he could end up in the referee’s notebook on Saturday.
