Fleetwood Town v Doncaster Rovers: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Doncaster Rovers will hope to take all three points against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium on Wednesday to get their promotion challenge in League Two back on track.

Rovers are fourth in the table, one place higher than last season’s finish when Crewe Alexandra beat them in the play-offs.

But they have dropped points in their last three league outings, including a disappointing 0-0 away draw with Carlisle United the weekend before last.

Fleetwood have drawn three of their last four games too, also beating 10th-placed Bradford City at home earlier this month amid a much tighter defensive record.

However, after falling from League One last season, the Cod Army will be unhappy to be languishing in 12th place with only two home league wins to their name to date.

Fleetwood Town v Doncaster Rovers betting tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals @ 19/20

With both teams eager for points for different reasons - Fleetwood aiming to climb the table and Doncaster pushing for promotion - Wednesday’s match promises to be an intriguing contest.

Historically, Fleetwood have had the upper hand against Doncaster, winning six of their last eight encounters.

However, their most recent meeting - at Highbury Stadium in 2022 - ended in a goalless draw.

These two clubs are towards the lower end of the League Two goal charts this season, with each averaging fewer than 2.5 goals per game in their matches.

Only 41% of Fleetwood’s games have seen more than two goals scored and that drops to only 25% of their home games, but 62% of Rovers’ away matches have featured three or more goals.

There were three scored in Doncaster’s FA Cup match at the weekend, when Gavin McCann’s men were pushed all the way by the Kettering Town.

Billy Sharp’s brace, his second coming in extra-time, secured Rovers' place in the third round where they will take on Hull City.

The visitors may have to overcome some tiredness from that match, while the manager will need to guard against his players being distracted from their promotion goal by the cup.

Fleetwood’s home record is not that inspiring this season, but the Cod Army are rarely beaten on their own patch.

Charlie Adam’s men have been beaten only once at home in the league - by third-placed Crewe - and have kept five clean sheets at Highbury Stadium.

However, they have only scored a total of six goals in those eight home contests and failed to find the back of the net on four occasions, so fewer than three goals could be on the cards on Wednesday evening.

Half-Time Result - Draw @ 6/5

The paucity of goals in Fleetwood’s home games have meant that four of the last five league contests at Highbury Stadium were level at the break.

Doncaster’s last three away matches in League Two have also been deadlocked at half-time and it would be no surprise to see these two sides level pegging after 45 minutes on Wednesday.

Corner Match Bet - Doncaster @ 5/6

Rovers have won more corners than any club in League Two this term and it is perhaps no surprise when you check out their crossing statistics.

McCann’s men have attempted 414 crosses this season - which is, again, more than any other club in the division and approaching twice as many crosses as Fleetwood have attempted (250).

Crosses don’t always lead to corners, but the stats underline how committed Rovers are to wing play compared to their opponents this week.

Fleetwood average 5.13 corners per game this season, while Doncaster are gaining 6.65 every time they play, so it should be prudent to back the visitors to finish with a higher corner count in this clash.
