Fenerbahce v Lyon: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Lyon's unconventional season took another bizarre twist this week with reports that eccentric owner John Textor has opened talks with recently sacked AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca to take over the team.

With a provisional relegation from Ligue 1 hanging over the club due to financial issues, a fire sale is in full swing as they look to raise enough funds to balance the books, with Maxence Caqueret, Jeffinho, Gift Orban and Anthony Lopes having all departed in the current window, with more to follow.

Les Gones' on-field form has inevitably suffered, failing to win their last three, including a Coupe de France defeat to Championnat National 3 Borugoin-Jallieu.

Despite those recent setbacks, the wider impression is that Pierre Sage, who led the club from the relegation places to a European finish last season, is doing a fantastic job.

They sit sixth in Ligue 1 and resume their UEFA Europa League campaign placed fourth in the standings ahead of Thursday's game with Fenerbahce.

Jose Mourinho is enjoying a rollercoaster first year in Turkey, going through his extensive back catalogue, with his team sitting six points behind Galatasaray in the Super Lig and 21st in this competition.

While Lyon are selling the family silver, injuries and suspensions are impacting Sari Kanaryalar, suggesting it could be a barnstormer at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Over three goals - 13/10

No one quite knows how Lyon will shape up when the transfer window closes on 3rd February, but if they can't sell enough of their players to meet their financial demands, relegation could become a reality and they might double down on this competition.

If so, would Fonseca be an upgrade, or does Sage's ability to block out the boardroom noise make him the perfect man to oversee the rest of the season?

The 45-year-old's side beat Olympiacos and Rangers, lost to Besiktas, and drew with Hoffenheim before defeating Qarabag and Eintracht Frankfurt ahead of Christmas.

With Ludogorets at home in their final league phase match, Les Gones will look to take the game to Fener and can beat anyone on their day.

A combination of defensive issues and an abundance of attacking talent has prompted Mourinho to switch to a back three and Thursday's hosts are unbeaten in six since since losing 2-0 to Athletic Bilbao in December.

The Yellow Canaries face an awkward trip to Midtjylland to conclude their league phase campaign and probably need a win from one of their remaining games to at least finish in the top 24.

That means Mourinho may let his team off the leash and their last four matches have seen three or more goals scored.

Fenerbahce are the favourites with the traders but these chaotic sides can really challenge each other so with both teams to score and over 2.5 goals only 8/11, it is worth pushing for over three goals in Istanbul.

Malick Fofana anytime goalscorer - 15/4

A player Les Gones are desperate to keep hold of is Malick Fofana, who has scored four UEFA Europa League goals and another strike will see him become the fifth teenager to net five in a single season.

With Alexandre Lacazette a doubt, further onus falls on the 19-year-old, but he appears to embrace pressure and is arguably the most reliable of the expected frontline of himself, Georges Mikautadze and Rayan Cherki.

Fofana is eyeing his first goal of 2025 and can shine against a defence missing the suspended Mulder and long-term absentees Rodrigo Becao and Jayden Oosterwolde.

Fenerbahce might be able to include Dusan Tadic, Edin Dzeko and Youssef En Nesyri in attack but are still to keep a clean sheet in this competition, and the former Gent winger can expose their flaws.

Over 5.5 cards - 10/11

Mourinho is never afraid to question referees and the football authorities, but anyone who has seen Fenerbahce play this season will understand why they have received a tournament-high 28 yellow cards.

They have been rugged, with Mulder receiving his marching orders in last month's defeat to Bilbao, but they can still call on Bright Osayi-Samuel, another player to have been sent off, as well as Fred, who has three yellow cards in this tournament, Caglar Soyuncu and Sebastian Szymanski.

Mining the card markets could prove worthwhile and while there are several options for those plotting a Bet Builder, keeping it simple and taking the over 5.5 in the standard options might be the best way to play.
