The new year brings new hope for Everton fans, who are desperate to see their club moving forward under new owners, the Friedkin Group, as they prepare to face Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup.
However, patience could be needed due to PSR challenges, which are expected to limit the club’s dealings during the January transfer window.
Everton are precariously placed in the Premier League with one point separating them from the drop zone, but they are expected to put a big effort into the FA Cup which is their only hope of securing silverware.
Third-tier Peterborough were delighted to reach the third round and secure a money-spinning tie.
But they are going through a tough time and have slipped to 19th in League One after losing four of their last five fixtures.
Everton win to nil - 11/8
Everton are the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers with 15 goals in 19 games, but they can take advantage of a drop in class by brushing aside Peterborough without the need of extra-time or penalties.
Brighter times should be coming for Everton, who have new owners on board and a brand new stadium getting closer to completion.
But fans have been getting understandably anxious, with recent results which threaten to drag the club into a relegation battle.
There was plenty of positivity after Sean Dyche’s side achieved battling draws away to Arsenal (0-0), at home to Chelsea (0-0) and away to Manchester City (1-1).
But the mood has quickly changed after back-to-back losses at home to Nottingham Forest (0-2) and away to Bournemouth (0-1) which increased calls for a change of direction.
Toffees’ manager Sean Dyche needs a victory to bolster his position and seems certain to go with a strong side in an effort to get some of the fans back on side.
A largely full-strength Everton should collect a victory and a clean sheet against Peterborough, who have been in freefall over recent months.
The Posh started the season with promotion ambitions, but they have a relegation battle on their hands after losing seven of their last nine league fixtures.
Peterborough are the joint-second highest scorers in League One but they face a backs-to-the-wall assignment on Merseyside and are unlikely to trouble the Everton goal.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score any time - 21/20
Peterborough have been especially poor at defending crosses and their weakness could be seized upon by Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is excellent in aerial duels.
Calvert-Lewin is expected to come in for injured forward Armando Broja and he looks like a solid 21/20 shot to find the net.
Most goals in the second half - 20/21
Peterborough have been trying to address their defensive issues and they might be able to keep things reasonably tight in the opening half at Goodison Park.
For the majority of the season the Posh have been committed to an open, expansive style of football, but there was a noticeable change at the weekend when they were beaten 1-0 at Wrexham.
Darren Ferguson’s side were harder to play against in north Wales and they will do their best to frustrate Everton by staying competitive for as long as possible.
Everton may be required to show a bit of patience but they should eventually find the breakthrough and force their opponents to come out of their shell.
The game should open up and punters can profit by backing a higher-scoring second half at 20/21.
