Everton v Liverpool: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Liverpool will head to neighbours Everton for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby looking to underline their Premier League title credentials and push the Blues closer to the relegation zone.

The Reds need the points if they're to finish Jurgen Klopp’s final season in style, while the Blues remain in danger of going down despite Sunday’s win over Nottingham Forest.

Everton v Liverpool betting tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals - 6/4

In recent years, there have not been many goals in the Merseyside derby, with Liverpool winning three of the last four meetings 2-0, all at Anfield, while the other finished goalless.

In fact, four of the last six Goodison Park derbies have ended 0-0 as the Toffees have often frustrated Jurgen Klopp’s side, with chances being at a premium at both ends.

This showdown could be similar for large parts, and a low-scoring affair is again anticipated between the two city rivals.

Overall, there have been under 2.5 goals in 11 of the last 15 Merseyside derbies. Despite Liverpool’s recent success, they almost always face a tough examination at Goodison, with Everton usually very competitive in the derby and often they have been able to keep the Reds’ forward line quiet.

Furthermore, both teams come into the game with question marks over their attacking output.

Everton have rarely scored more than one goal in games since the turn of the year, with Sunday’s 2-0 win over Forest being just the second time in 20 outings in all competitions when they have scored more than once.

Liverpool forwards Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz have all struggled for form of late too, with the Reds frontline particularly guilty of missing plenty of chances in the recent defeats to Manchester United in the FA Cup and Crystal Palace in the league.

Draw/Liverpool - HT/FT - 10/3

Sean Dyche will have a defensive gameplan to try and keep it tight and then hopefully hit the visitors on the break, and it would be no surprise to see it working to begin with.

Liverpool have had problems starting games slowly this term and have come from behind to win in seven games this season, eventually demonstrating their superiority in the second half.

They were level at half-time on Sunday at Fulham before overpowering the Cottagers after the break and had to wait until the 75th minute before scoring the opening goal - a penalty from Salah - in the reverse fixture at Anfield back in October.

With a victory vital for the Reds, they still look the more likely to come out on top, but they may have to be patient again before securing all three points.

Cody Gakpo to score anytime - 7/4

Liverpool’s regular front three in the second half of the season have been Diaz, Nunez and Salah but Klopp opted to rotate his frontline against Fulham, with Nunez and Salah dropped to the bench and Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota starting.

Gakpo and Jota caught the eye, and while Salah is likely to come back into the starting line-up on Wednesday with Jota picking up a fresh injury, Gakpo should retain his place.

The Dutch international has had an inconsistent season for the Reds, mixing some good displays with some erratic outings, but he has weighed in with an important 14 goals in all competitions.

The 24-year-old scored his first goal for Liverpool last season against Everton in the home 2-0 win in October and has looked sharp of late. Gakpo attempted four shots - three of which were on target - against Fulham to suggest he is in the mood to hurt Everton again.
