Everton v Aston Villa: Prediction, Tips and Odds

For the first time in 12 years, David Moyes will oversee a game as Everton manager when the Toffees welcome Aston Villa to Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Moyes, who has managed Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham since departing Everton in 2013, made a surprise return to the Merseyside club this week, replacing Sean Dyche.

Dyche had bizarrely been dismissed just hours before Everton's FA Cup third round contest with Peterborough on Thursday night and Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman were tasked with overseeing the game, leading the club to a 2-0 win.

But in the Premier League, the club have been nudged closer and closer to the relegation zone and they could be up against it when they host Unai Emery's Aston Villa.

Everton v Aston Villa betting tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals - 4/5

Everton started the midweek Premier League fixtures just one point above the relegation zone but they boast one of the best defensive records in the division.

Their tally of 25 goals conceded in the top flight this season is better than Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United, albeit having played one game less, and Dyche made them a tough nut to crack.

But in the process, Everton have become seriously blunt in attack, scoring just 15 goals in 19 matches. Only Southampton in 20th have scored fewer with 12.

Forwards Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil are their leading scorers in the Premier League with just three goals and rejuvenating their attack will be high on Moyes' list of priorities.

But in the meantime, the Scot may well play to Everton's strengths and a point would not be a bad result following two successive defeats in the league.

For that reason, this could be a cagey and low-scoring affair and under 2.5 goals makes an appeal at 4/5.

Each of Everton's last six games in all competitions have featured under 2.5 goals and this could be another uneventful contest.

No goalscorer - 17/2

Those punters anticipating a low-scoring affair but after a bigger-priced bet might want to consider backing no goalscorer at 17/2.

This is, in essence, the same as backing a 0-0 draw, but if an own goal is scored no goalscorer will still land.

Everton's defensive solidity is no secret and they can draw confidence from the fact only 11 of Aston Villa's 30 league goals this season have come on their travels.

The Toffees, meanwhile, drew 0-0 with Arsenal and Chelsea in December and that was also the scoreline when they took on Newcastle, West Ham and Brentford earlier this campaign.

Ashley Young to be booked - 9/4

There are slim pickings in the goalscorer markets but one player bet that stands out is Ashley Young to be carded at 9/4.

Up against his old club, Young will be determined to make an impact but he may struggle to deal with the pace of potential opponent Morgan Rogers.

Young has already received five yellow cards in the Premier League this term and could again go into the book in a potentially scrappy affair.
