Euros: Team of the Tournament

The 2024 European Championship has been a fascinating mix of styles and formations, enjoyed by packed crowds in Germany throughout the tournament.

We’ve seen some great goals, impressive defensive performances and new stars appear on the international stage.

In this article, we select our team of the tournament (4-2-3-1 formation) from those players that have delivered to a consistently high level.

Jan Oblak (Slovenia)

Defences have reigned supreme at Euro 2024 and there are a spate of goalkeepers who have blossomed during the tournament.

One individual who's reminded us of his world-class qualities is Oblak, with the Atletico Madrid shot-stopper inspiring his Slovenian teammates to clean sheets against England and Portugal.

Though his performance in the clash with Portugal was overshadowed by Diogo Costa's penalty heroics, Oblak became only the second goalkeeper in history to save a penalty from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after the 31-year-old denied the Portuguese captain in extra time.

Dani Carvajal (Spain)

The indomitable Dani Carvajal has transferred his all-conquering form from club to country and the right-back has been an influential figure in Spain's progression through the tournament.

His experience invaluable, the 32-year-old has proved he can still keep some of the more enigmatic wingers in check and though Spain prevailed in the semi-final against France without his presence, Luis de la Fuente's side feel far more secure with Carvajal on the pitch.

Aymeric Laporte (Spain)

Going into the tournament, there were fitness concerns surrounding the former Manchester City man.

Laporte missed the opening game against Croatia, but has been a key figure in Spain’s run to the final.

The 30-year-old has played in the Saudi league in the last year, but showed he can still deliver on the biggest stage against the current attacking stars.

William Saliba (France)

After an outstanding season with Arsenal (15/8 to win 2024-25 Premier League), Saliba has taken his impressive club form into international action.

The centre-back was a big reason why France made it to the last four and, at the age of just 23, looks like being a mainstay of the squad for years to come.

Ferdi Kadioglu (Turkey)

It's of little surprise that a clutch of Europe's elite clubs are now tracking Kadioglu after his string of standout performances for Turkey.

Given licence to roam forward and contribute to attacks, the 24-year-old was a persistent menace for opposition on the left flank but he was equally effective from a defensive viewpoint, with no defender completing more successful tackles (12) than Kadioglu.

Fabian Ruiz (Spain)

The Spain midfield has almost been a throw-back to the days of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets, with Ruiz the most impressive of their triumvirate.

The man from Paris Saint-Germain has not only provide a link between the midfield and the attackers, but he has also popped up with two goals.

Rodri (Spain)

Manchester City rarely lose when he features and now Rodri has instilled his invincibility in the Spain team.

The midfield lynchpin has been the beating heart in La Roja's quest for glory and Rodri is now 11/4 to be named UEFA Player of the Tournament and 6/1 to win the 2024 Ballon d'Or.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

It’s been a tournament of young stars and Yamal has shone the brightest, becoming the youngest ever player to score at a European Championship.

The Barcelona ace scored arguably the goal of the tournament, with his sublime left-foot effort against France in the semi-finals.

Yamal has also collected three assists and looks like a player with a big future ahead of him.

Jamal Musiala (Germany)

Bayern Munich’s winger was tipped as a star of the tournament prior to a ball being kicked and he did not disappoint.

After scoring in the tournament-opening 5-1 success over Scotland, Musiala followed that up with the first goal in the 2-0 success over Hungary.

The 21-year-old grabbed his third goal of the tournament in the last-16 win over Denmark.

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

The Liverpool forward has been the main attacking threat for the Dutch and registered three goals en route to the semi-finals.

Gakpo – who also scored in three consecutive group matches at the 2022 World Cup – scored and assisted in his country’s 3-0 win over Poland.

Georges Mikautadze (Georgia)

There have been few out-and-out strikers that have caught the eye at the tournament, which is why we're leaning towards Georgia's first-ever goalscorer at a major tournament and one of the current joint-top goalscorers at Euro 2024.

Currently plying his trade with Ligue 2 outfit Metz, Mikautadze has been linked with moves to Roma and Monaco following his starring role in Georgia's progression to the knockout stages, where he scored in all three group stage fixtures.
