Euros permutations and third place table: Who will England play in Round of 16?

As the group stages of Euro 2024 draws to a close, we take a look at the permutations regarding which teams will face each other in the knockout rounds.

Euro 2024

The top two from each group section will automatically qualify for the Round of 16, whilst the four best third-placed teams will also progress through to the knockout rounds.

We take a look at the qualification permutations for each Euros group and the possible Round of 16 match-ups.

Group A

Germany & Switzerland through as Hungary await their fate

Germany sealed top spot in Group A following an injury-time equaliser from Niclas Fullkrug in their final group match against Switzerland, whilst the Swiss also progress through to the knockout rounds in second.

Hungary's last gasp victory over Scotland sees Marco Rossi's side sat on three points and hoping to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams, whilst Steve Clarke's Scotland have been eliminated.

Group B

Italy join Spain in last 16

Three-time Euros winners Spain are safely through to the Round of 16 with a perfect record of three wins from three in Group B.

Mattia Zaccagni's last-gasp equaliser for Italy against Croatia ensured Italy's passage through to the knockout stages, with Zlatko Dalic's side all but eliminated.

Group C

England labour to top spot

A draw for England in their final group game was enough to secure top spot with Denmark failing to beat Serbia. Barring a hugely unlikely sequence of results, the best third-placed teams will come from Groups A, C, D and E or C, D, E and F.

If Czech Republic (v Turkey) or Georgia (v Portugal) win, England will play third place in Group E. If neither Czech Republic or Georgia win, England will play the Netherlands in the last 16.

Slovenia's draw means they'll go through as one of the best third-place teams, with their disciplinary record one point worse than Denmark's, meaning Denmark will play Germany in the last-16.

Group D

Shock as Austria top group

Already-eliminated Poland were 1-0 down to France, who were 1/20 to secure the three points and top the group when a penalty was given against them. Poland levelled through Robert Lewandowski, and with Austria beating the Netherlands 3-2, it means the Netherlands fall to third place - though they'll qualify for the last-16, where they'll likely play England.

Group E

All four teams level on points

A piece of Euros history has been made in Group E, with all four teams locked on three points after two rounds of fixtures for the first time in the competition's history.

This means it is all to play for as Romania take on Slovakia and Belgium face Ukraine in the final group stage matches.

Because teams are separated on head-to-head, it's hard to predict who will win this group. If Belgium beat Ukraine, they'll finish top as long as Slovakia don't beat Romania.

For Romania, they'll go through as runners-up if Belgium win and they don't lose to Slovakia. For Slovakia, they'll top the group with a win, unless Ukraine beat Belgium.

Ukraine will win the group if they beat Belgium and Slovakia beat Romania.

If both matches finish in a draw, Belgium would finish ahead of Romania due to winning their match and having a better goal difference than Slovakia and Ukraine.

Group F

Turkiye and Czechia face final day showdown

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal have safely navigated through Group F following back-to-back wins over Czechia and Georgia.

The Czechs and Vincenzo Montella's Turkiye look best placed to follow Portugal through to the knockout rounds, with these two nations to lock horns in a vital final group match set to take place in Hamburg.

Turkiye will go through if they avoid defeat to Czechia, whereas Czechia go through with a win. The only way Georgia can finish in the top two is if they beat Portugal, Czechia beat Turkey, and Georgia's goal difference is then better than Czechia's.

  • Head-to-head goals scored
  • Overall goal difference
  • Overall goals scored
  • Lowest disciplinary points total
  • Ranking in qualifiers
