Olga Carmona's goal made the difference as Spain Women defeated England Women 1-0 in the final of the 2023 World Cup.
The Lionesses have subsequently lost to the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany but the clock can almost be reset, with Sarina Wiegman's team now plotting towards this summer's Euros defence in Switzerland.
They kicked off 2025 with Friday's 1-1 Nations League draw in Portugal, Alessia Russo opening the scoring before Kika Nazareth equalised in Portimao.
Spain have also been underwhelming since winning the World Cup but may have turned a corner, drawing 1-1 with Canada and Italy before beating Korea Republic 5-0, France 4-2 and on Thursday, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Belgium 3-2 thanks to a couple of stoppage-time strikes.
With both sides' next fixtures not until April, the coaches could look to experiment, but the chance to get one over a rival ahead of the summer means there is a real opportunity for fireworks.
Draw and both teams to score - 4/1
England are a team in transition but need to start picking up results and Wiegman will look at this game as both an opportunity to find her best available XI and give others a chance to show they belong in the starting side.
Unconvincing wins over South Africa and Switzerland, plus a draw with Sweden and a 4-3 defeat to Germany provided some pressure but there was real potential shown in November's 0-0 against Emma Hayes' USA.
The Lionesses have also only lost one competitive home match since 2023 and face a Spain team that has repeatedly shown resilience while also throwing in some poor performances, including losing to the Czech Republic in Euros qualifying.
La Roja came from 2-0 down in their 3-2 victory over Belgium and will want to avoid more frustration like their extra-time defeat to England in the quarter-final of the Euros.
With these two the favourites to progress from Nations League Group A2, and Wiegman and Montse Tome searching for their best combinations, an entertaining draw could be the answer.
Alessia Russo anytime goalscorer - 10/3
Russo was on target in Portugal and this looks like another chance for her to establish herself as England's first-choice forward heading into the summer.
A front three of the 26-year-old through the middle and Lauren James and Beth Mead on the flanks looks handy, although Mead's withdrawal with a thigh injury means Wiegman may give Jess Park another run, although the recalled Chloe Kelly is another option.
Russo's eight goals in 14 WSL matches places her behind only Manchester City's Bunny Shaw.
It feels like her time and she may also have added motivation. She featured in all six games at the last Euros, scoring four goals in the process, but failed to force her way into the team and was used exclusively as a substitute.
At 26, Russo is in her playing prime and the Arsenal forward can cement her spot as England's number nine by netting again.
Claudia Pina anytime goalscorer - 12/5
Spain's Claudia Pina might only be the co-fourth favourite among her side in the anytime scorer market but the Barcelona forward is becoming an increasingly important member of Tome's team.
Pina started the win over Belgium and her 77th minute effort halved the arrears before Lucia Garcia and Cristina Martin-Prieto both scored in stoppage time to grab a dramatic victory in Valencia.
The 23-year-old also netted in last November's win over Korea Republic and December's 4-2 triumph against France and is becoming undroppable.
Spain's star power also means she might be underrated in the market and looks to have a taste for the big occasion after also scoring twice against Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Supercopa Femenina.
Pina is expected to retain her spot on the left of the Spain attack and with England's regular right-back Lucy Bronze out of the game through injury, there might be more opportunities, especially with Bronze's deputy Jess Carter usually more comfortable in a central position.
