England Women v France Women: Prediction, Tips and Odds

England already have ground to make up in their qualification group for next year’s Euros in Switzerland and toppling Les Bleues in Newcastle is likely to be a difficult task.

Draw - 12/5

The Lionesses celebrated their finest hour when winning the Euros at Wembley three years ago, but they are unable to leave anything to chance if they want to earn the opportunity to defend their title in Switzerland next summer.

Sarina Wiegman’s team have been handed a tough qualifying group and already find themselves behind France as they look to claim one of two qualification spots following a 1-1 draw with Sweden.

It looks like it is going to be a battle all the way and while a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland was safely earned, the first of a double-header against France at St James’ Park looks set to be key.

England have lost eight of their 13 games against Les Bleues, beating their rivals from across the channel just twice and they went down 3-1 the last time they faced each other in a friendly three years ago.

And two wins for Herve Renard’s team mean they have grabbed the early initiative in the section, so a point at St James’ Park on Friday would not necessarily be a bad result with a return at St Etienne to come on Tuesday, especially as they have already won in Sweden.

These look to be two evenly matched sides and with England’s price looking a bit skinny after their failure to beat the Swedes at Wembley, a draw looks the most sensible play at 12/5.

Under 2.5 goals - 19/20

Both of these teams can be freescoring when the pressure is off but it is difficult to envisage such a scenario in the North East.

These teams have been involved in four qualifiers between them in this tough group and they have all featured fewer than three goals.

Both of Les Bleues’ victories have been by a 1-0 scoreline and seven of the ten matches they have played since losing on penalties to hosts Australia at the World Cup following a goalless draw have featured fewer than three goals.

The visitors’ striking resources are also hampered by the fact Lyon forward Vicki Becho will miss the trip after being sent off in the win over the Swedes and the prolific Eugenie Le Sommer is also ruled out with a knee injury.

The Lionesses could also find it difficult to create chances if France decide that a draw would be an excellent result, so under 2.5 goals appeals at 19/20.

Georgia Stanway to be booked - 12/5

The centre of midfield is set to be key in a tight game and Bayern Munich’s Georgia Stanway can be expected to be in the thick of the action, so it would not be a surprise if she picked up a yellow card.

She was booked six times for the Frauen-Bundesliga champions this season and committed more than double the number of fouls of any of her teammates in their league matches, so there may be value to be had in her receiving a caution at 12/5.
