England v Iceland: Prediction, Tips & Odds

England delivered a strong second-half performance to seal a 3-0 success over Bosnia on Monday and they are widely expected to register another comfortable victory when hosting Iceland in their final match before the European Championships.

There will be a few more selection options available to Gareth Southgate after Bukayo Saka, Luke Shaw and Anthony Gordon shook off injuries and returned to first team training.

England’s players have one last chance to press their claims for inclusion in the final squad but they will be up against a highly motivated Iceland seeking to replicate their shock 2-1 success over the Three Lions at Euro 2016.

England v Iceland betting tips and predictions

England and under 3.5 goals - 6/5

England were underwhelming for the opening hour of their 3-0 win against Bosnia and are unlikely to deliver a goal glut against Iceland at Wembley.

The Three Lions should pick up another victory but some of their players are likely to be more concerned with reducing the risk of injury than racking up a wide-margin success.

Regular viewers of the England team have learned not to expect too many fireworks in the non-competitive games.

England have not scored more than three goals in a friendly fixture since a 4-0 success over Slovakia in March 2009.

Over the last three years Gareth Southgate’s side have won seven of nine friendlies, but four of those victories were by single goal margins.

There has generally been a lack of intensity from England in their friendly fixtures and that trend is unlikely to change with such a huge tournament on the horizon.

Iceland’s players are more likely to dig deep as they prepare to face demanding away matches against England and the Netherlands over the next four days.

The undoubted high point for Icelandic football was achieved at Euro 2016 where they reached the quarter-finals after an incredible 2-1 victory over England in Nice.

They went on to qualify for the 2018 World Cup but fortunes have dipped in recent years with failures to qualify for Euro 2020, World Cup 2022 and Euro 2024.

Iceland were well off the pace in Euro 2024 qualifying Group J, taking 10 points from 10 games, and they wasted a second chance in the play-offs when losing 2-1 to Ukraine.

There are some talented youngsters coming through, including 19-year-old FC Copenhagen forward Orri Oskarsson, who netted nine goals in 26 league appearances this season.

But Iceland no longer appear to be a serious danger to the top teams and the best they can hope for is to limit a distracted England to a low-scoring success.

Harry Kane to score the first goal - 9/4

England’s starting line up should be a lot stronger than it was against Bosnia and it should feature Harry Kane, who may be in need of some match minutes before leading the Three Lions’ attack at Euro 2024.

Kane was carrying a back injury towards the end of the season and was absent for Bayern Munich’s last two Bundesliga fixtures.

However, he returned to competitive action as a substitute against Bosnia and helped himself to his 63rd international goal.

Kane’s main goal against Iceland will be to avoid injury and build his fitness levels.

Nonetheless he always has an insatiable appetite for goals and looks a solid 9/4 shot to open the scoring.

Sverrir Ingason to be booked - 10/3

Iceland can expect to be tested by a high class England attack and their probable starting centre-backs, Daniel Gretarsson and Sverrir Ingason, may struggle to maintain their discipline.

Midtjylland’s Ingason has been yellow carded in three of his last eight Danish top flight appearances and he looks an overpriced 10/3 wager for a caution at Wembley.
