Maguire and Henderson have both been called up to England’s squad to face Ukraine and Scotland, with the former 2/5 to make the squad for next summer’s Euros.
England boss Gareth Southgate made the claim back in 2017 that players would be selected on form; a promise he reneged on in March when selecting Kalvin Phillips and Maguire, with Maguire making just eight Premier League starts last season and failing to impress when he did play.
To Maguire’s credit, he’s rarely let England down and his international form holds plenty of water with Southgate.
Nevertheless, Maguire’s game time at Old Trafford will be limited once again and the defender has already turned down a move to West Ham where he’d have a better chance of staying in Southgate’s plans amid plenty of competition in his position.
Despite impressing for Milan, being named in the Serie A Team of the Year prior to the 2022 World Cup, Fikayo Tomori has hardly featured for Southgate, making just three appearances since 2019, but the former Chelsea man must be in contention for a first-team place and has been named in Southgate’s latest squad.
John Stones will likely occupy one of the centre-back slots, but Levi Colwill and Ben White must be rivalling Tomori to start alongside the Manchester City man, with Marc Guehi, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk and Ezri Konsa also in contention.
Henderson’s England days must also be coming to an end after his move to Saudi Arabia, especially with the talent coming through in the middle of the park.
The Three Lions have shown so much promise in recent years, reaching the latter stages of tournaments with a squad full of world class, young talent – so much so that the likes of Phil Foden, who made his England debut three years ago, only has 16 international starts to his name.
With options including Foden, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish, the challenge for Gareth Southgate is keeping square pegs in square holes; the undoing of past England bosses.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was also deployed in midfield against Malta over the summer and has been used as an inverted full-back by Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool in recent months, offering another option to Southgate.
One potential problem area for Southgate is left-back. While Kieran Tripper can feature on the left, Southgate would surely prefer him occupying the right flank. Luke Shaw also appears to have suffered a muscle injury that will keep him out for months rather than weeks, and he’ll need to prove his fitness in the second half of the season.
The positive is that Ben Chilwell is fit again and playing more as a left-winger than a left-back for Chelsea, and at the moment looks the best placed to start England’s opening group game.
Assuming he’s fit, Harry Kane will be in the squad, but there are no shortage of understudies. Callum Wilson made the 2022 World Cup squad, but he’s now got the likes of Ollie Watkins and Eddie Nketiah for company, and with England having so much talent out wide, it’s unlikely more than two out-and-out strikers will be called up.
Nketiah has earned a call-up to the latest squad, but with Gabriel Jesus fit again, the Arsenal man will surely struggle to sufficiently impress over the season to make the Euros squad.
Raheem Sterling also misses out, despite impressing so far this season for Chelsea, but if the former Manchester City man maintains his form, he’s sure to catch Southgate’s eye again.
