Eastleigh v Oldham Athletic: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Having been relegated from the Football League in 2021-22, Oldham Athletic have serious ambitions to return and a strong start to the National League season enhanced hopes amongst supporters of securing that promotion.

The Latics are one of the biggest spenders in non-league and, after 22 games, they sit fifth, well in the hunt for the title as they trail leaders York City by eight points but have two fixtures in hand.

Oldham will have to be on their A-game at Eastleigh, who have lost only one of their last 10 matches and are also within five points off the play-off places.

Micky Mellon’s visitors must respond to a 2-1 defeat at Hartlepool on New Year’s Day, but they had gone eight matches unbeaten prior to that, winning four on the spin.

That setback at Victoria Park was only Oldham’s third defeat of the campaign and they should remain full of confidence ahead of their trip to the Silverlake Stadium, where Eastleigh have collected maximum points in only one of their last seven league outings.

Eastleigh v Oldham Athletic betting tips and predictions

Oldham to win - 11/10

Eastleigh are never easy to budge on their own patch, having suffered only two defeats in 12 home league outings, but four of their five victories in Hampshire came within their opening five fixtures.

The hosts have failed to build on that strong start, though, and they may be found wanting against an Oldham side who boast plenty of players that are still capable of operating at a higher level.

In Mike Fondop and James Norwood, Oldham have two prolific goalscorers, while midfielders Tom Conlon, Dan Gardner and Sam Clucas have all played at League One or above within the last few years.

Oldham have clearly spent a lot of money in their pursuit of a League Two return and they have made an impressive start to the season, suffering only three defeats in 22 games to keep them in the title hunt.

The Latics have lost only twice in 11 away league games and that includes draws away at Barnet and Halifax, two sides also in the promotion shake-up.

While Oldham will have been disappointed to lose 2-1 away at Hartlepool last time out, they had scored 13 goals in recording four straight victories prior to that and they have not suffered back-to-back defeats all season.

Mellon’s men have recorded five clean sheets in their last seven league assignments and they can bounce back at an Eastleigh side who have not scored two or more in six straight home games.

James Norwood anytime goalscorer - 7/5

It was only as recently as 2018-19 when Norwood was crowned League Two’s leading scorer while with Tranmere Rovers, something which earned him a move to League One with Ipswich Town, where he spent three seasons.

After another third-tier campaign with Barnsley in 2022-23, Norwood was lured away to Oldham for big money at this level and the 34-year-old should still have plenty to offer.

Norwood is a complete natural in front of goal and, after a slow start to proceedings at Boundary Park, he appears to be finding some consistency.

Norwood has netted seven goals in his last ten appearances, which includes against former club Tranmere in the FA Cup, and he could bolster that tally at the Silverlake Stadium, where Eastleigh have kept only two clean sheets in 12 league outings.
