This is a fixture that the home side have dominated historically but they are coming up from the Championship, whereas Dundee enjoyed a strong campaign in the top flight last season.

United were actually stronger on their travels last season with 40 of their 75 Championship points coming on the road. The Dee only won four of their 19 Premiership trips but they also only lost seven of their away games before the league split, while both sides enjoyed strong League Cup campaigns prior to the start of the league season as they progressed beyond the group stages.

That makes picking a result a tricky task here and a draw at 9/4 is probably the best play in the match result market, but the standout bet here is perhaps both teams to score at a more modest 4/6.

Dundee scored an impressive 18 goals in just four League Cup games and they scored in seven of their final 10 trips last season despite completing the campaign in the Championship Group in the Premiership.

The Terrors were also fairly prolific in the League Cup, netting 10 times in their final three games after drawing a blank in their season opener at Falkirk.

Both sides will be keen to lay down a marker in this first game of the new season and claim the local bragging rights. The last Dundee Derby in April 2022 ended 2-2 at this venue and a similar result wouldn’t be a surprise here, so backing both teams to score looks a strong play.

There are plenty of decent options in the anytime scorer market as United new-boy Jort van der Sande and team-mate Lewis Moult, who finished second in the Championship scoring charts last season, lead the market at 2/1.

Luke McCowan hit 10 Premiership goals for the Dee last season and appeals at 11/2, while Simon Murray would surely love to score against his former club at 11/4.

However, the best value play here could be winger Kristijan Trapanovski at 9/2 after his impressive displays since his switch to Tannadice.

The North Macedonia forward arrived at the Terrors from Shkupi over the summer and has made a big impact already with three goals and two assists in the League Cup.

Dundee represent a step-up in class from the opposition United have faced so far this term, but Trapanovski should come into the game in confident mood and he can open his account on his Premiership debut.

Derby games are often fiery affairs and there were five cards dished out when these sides last met just over two years ago.

Dundee new recruit Ethan Ingram looks a good contender to be shown a yellow card based on his record with Salford last season, as the 21-year-old defender was booked eight times in just 23 league games for the English League Two outfit.
