Dundee have already guaranteed their place in the Scottish League Cup knockout stages and should complete the job by seeing off Inverness on Saturday.

Caley Thistle have plenty of work to do, but Duncan Ferguson’s side have been struggling for goals and have already come up short in simpler assignments in the competition this season.

Dundee to win to nil - 6/4

Dundee have played three group games in this season’s Scottish League Cup and their progress through to the knockout rounds has been comfortable, which has promoted the thought they should see off Inverness with the minimum of fuss on Saturday.

The temptation could be there for manager Tony Docherty to give some of the fringe members of his squad the opportunity to impress, but we are not at the stage of the campaign where players will be looking to have a rest, so it is equally possible that he will stick with a winning formula.

Certainly the way his team has performed in the competition merits their chance to see the job through, and with his team looking solid and conceding just twice in their three opening games, there looks a strong chance of a win without conceding.

Thistle have to go on the front foot but they have not shown much in the final third, failing to score against Annan and playing out a goalless draw with Arbroath, when they lost a penalty shootout.

It would not be a surprise if again they left their shooting boots at home, so the Dark Blues can keep their clean sheet intact in a victory.

Dundee have scored a first-half goal in four of their last five matches and their strikers are already gaining some confidence-boosting goals with the start of the Premiership just a week away.

Curtis Main scored a hat-trick in the 7-1 opening victory over League Two Bonnyrigg Rose and Simon Murray will have been delighted to open his account for his new club with two against Annan after making a summer move from Ross County.

Two of their goals in the 3-1 win over Annan came in the closing stages and they will not want to leave things late again, so we can expect them to go on the front foot early on, take a lead into the interval, and then see the job through.

Number of goals in match - 2 or 3 - 11/10

Nevertheless, it is a strange game for Dundee as they have already confirmed their place in the second round.

An open game is expected with over 2.5 goals available to back at 1/2, but while Inverness need to find the net, recent results suggest that Duncan Ferguson’s side are not guaranteed to do that.

Should Dundee put themselves in a strong position before half-time, it would not be a surprise if they eased up after the interval.

There will be little need to twist the knife as thoughts could undoubtedly turn to a cracking derby against Dundee United next Sunday which will get their Scottish Premiership campaign under way.

So it makes sense to go either side of the total goals line and back the match to feature either two or three goals at 11/10.
