Doncaster v Crewe: Prediction, Tips and Odds 

Doncaster are halfway to Wembley after a convincing 2-0 win at Crewe in the first leg of their League Two play-off semi-final at Gresty Road on Monday.

It was just the latest success in an extraordinary end to Doncaster’s season and has left Crewe needing to buck their own miserable form if they are to upset the odds and reach the final.

There isn’t a team in the EFL finishing the season in better form than Doncaster, who can continue their remarkable turnaround by beating Crewe at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Grant McCann’s Rovers are halfway to Wembley and the play-off final after carving out a solid 2-0 win at Crewe on Monday night.

They will be wary of taking lightly a side who may have gone off the boil in recent weeks but were scoring goals for fun earlier in the season.

But the truth is that these are two clubs who have entered the play-offs in very different form and Monday’s result at Crewe merely emphasised the gulf between the two. 

Crewe had a few chances but didn’t take them, which is the story of their last few months. Donny defended superbly and took their openings with Luke Molyneux and Harry Biggins finding the net.

Doncaster are 4/6 to beat Crewe at home and even though this is a match between the sides who finished fifth and sixth in League Two, separated by just goal difference, it’s hard to dispute the hosts are value.

They go into this game on a run of 11 wins in 12 matches, an astonishing streak which has seen them soar from 20th place in February to the brink of promotion.

Indeed the only match in that sequence they didn’t win - a 2-2 draw with Gillingham - they were two up and cruising until keeper Timothee Lo-Tutala’s luckless red card, subsequently overturned.

Crewe, in contrast, cannot buy a win or even a goal. They have failed to find the net in six of their last eight matches and, worryingly given they need to find the net at least twice to have a sniff of qualifying, have not scored more than once in a match since 2nd March.

They are injury-stricken but now have to gamble - it’s that simple. To that end, expect an open game, risks taken by Crewe but Doncaster to show their superiority. Back the South Yorkshire side to win and over 2.5 goals at 6/4.

Hakeeb Adelakun Anytime Goalscorer - 2/1

Doncaster have had their share of heroes during this amazing spring offensive, but none are winning plaudits quite as liberally as winger Hakeeb Adelakun.

Signed on loan from Lincoln in January, Adelakun has appeared 20 times for Rovers and been on the losing side just twice. He was named League Two player of the month in February and the praise of opposition managers has been ringing in his ears for weeks.

He has weighed in with nine goals, seven assists, a barrage of star-studded performances and the Rovers’ danger man looks a decent bet at 2/1 to find the net at any time.

Under 4.5 cards - 4/5

Crewe have been the bad boys of League Two, averaging 4.5 cards per game throughout the 2023/24 season. Doncaster are slightly better behaved, averaging 2.2.

Cards are demonstrably less commonplace in the basement than, say, the Premier League and a mark of 4.5 cards in two-way betting looks too high.

Crewe centre-back Mickey Demetriou picked up the only yellow card of the match in the first leg.

That’s three times these teams have now met this season with a grand total of eight cards and never more than four in a match.
