Derby v Reading: Predictions, Tips and Odds

Derby will be eager to make no mistakes when Reading are the visitors on Tuesday evening, with the Rams hoping to end the season with their Championship status restored.

The Rams have five points to make up on leaders Portsmouth, but they have third-placed Bolton snapping at their heels and they need to keep Wanderers at arm’s length to ensure they gain one of the two automatic places into the second tier.

Paul Warne’s side head into their Royals rumble having won their last two matches 3-0, but Reading cannot be easily dismissed despite their season being marred by points deductions following problems off the field.

They have lost just two of their last 10 matches on the road, so this is not a match where Derby can take three points from granted.

Derby v Reading betting tips and predictions

Derby to win & both teams to score - 5/2

Few Derby fans would be happy with the prospect of another season outside the top two divisions and this is just the sort of game they need to win to inspire confidence that a return to the Championship is on the cards.

They are hot favourites to see off Reading, who will just be delighted to avoid leaving the division by the other exit after all their off-the-field issues, but a 2-1 defeat to another struggling team Charlton recently will mean the Rams are guarded against being too complacent.

Their Pride Park record remains strong - the loss against the Addicks was one of only two in their last 16 on their own patch - and they have steadied the ship with two 3-0 wins over Port Vale and Bristol Rovers.

However, both teams have scored in eight of their last 10 home games and the Royals have gained some of their better results away from home where they are generally spared the disruption caused by frequent protests against the club’s ownership.

They have lost two of their last 10 on the road - one of those was against table-topping Pompey - and scored in all but one of those matches, so take the Rams to win but with both teams finding the net.

Dwight Gayle to score at any time - 8/5

Warne has been able to boost his forward resources by signing Dwight Gayle from Stoke and the short journey along the A50 looks to have done the experienced striker a great deal of good.

Gayle was unable to make much of an impression at the bet365 Stadium, but a drop into League One looks to have boosted his confidence and he has begun to flourish now he has more realistic expectations of greater gametime.

The former Crystal Palace forward has found the net in both of the Rams’ recent wins over Port Vale and Bristol Rovers, and there looks a strong chance that he can claim another goal against the Royals.

They have conceded 34 goals on the road this season which is the second highest number in the whole division.

Over 10.5 corners - 1/1

With 16 places separating these two in the League One table, it seems inevitable that Derby will be doing most of the attacking and that could lead to plenty of corners being taken in Tuesday’s Pride Park clash.

Peterborough are the only team in the third tier who have forced a higher number of corners than Warne’s Rams this season, with County claiming an average of 6.49 per match.

Their figure is slightly lower for home matches, but those looking to back more than 10 in the match will be encouraged by the fact the Royals have conceded an average of 6.44 per road game, and each of those fixtures have produced a mean figure of 10.89.

There have been an average of 11.49 in Derby’s 37 League Two matches this season, so there looks a strong chance there will be over 10.5 in Tuesday’s clash.
