Derby v Charlton: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Two teams at different ends of the League One table meet at Pride Park as promotion-chasing Derby play host to a relegation-threatened Charlton.

The Rams are second in League One, seven points behind league leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand, but they need to put up a positive response to Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at promotion rivals Barnsley.

Charlton, meanwhile, are only one point above the relegation zone and they are without a league win in 16, a run stretching back to the end of November.

However, performances have improved since the appointment of Nathan Jones and they have drawn three matches on the spin, including matches against table-topping Pompey and third-placed Bolton.

The pressure is on Charlton to pick up some points with only 12 games remaining while Derby face stiff competition from Bolton and Barnsley in the race for automatic promotion.

The Rams are 13/20 to record victory, with the draw 11/4 and a shock Charlton win available at 9/2.

Derby v Charlton betting predictions

Draw - 11/4

Despite the obvious gulf in class between this pair, who are separated by 32 points and have different aspirations, they could be difficult to separate on Tuesday evening.

Derby can’t afford too many more setbacks in their pursuit of Portsmouth, who are seven points clear at the top of League One having played one match more, but they could be frustrated by the Addicks.

The Rams have lost only three of their 16 home league games this season but five of their nine wins have been by a single goal.

Derby’s last four home games have featured three one-goal wins over Burton, Cheltenham and Stevenage and on each occasion they needed a goal within the final 10 minutes to spare their blushes.

The other match in that sequence was a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury and they shouldn’t be expecting an easy ride against Charlton, who should be feeling more optimistic about their survival prospects after recent results.

The Addicks may have gone 16 league games without a win but three draws in a row against Lincoln, Bolton and Portsmouth suggest they are edging closer to stopping the rot.

Charlton have looked more organised since appointing Jones as manager at the start of February and they could claim another point at Pride Park.

The visitors have drawn eight of their 16 away league games this term, which includes trips to Portsmouth, Bolton and Barnsley - three sides alongside Derby in the top four.

That shows they have what it takes defensively to cope with the pressure Derby are likely to throw at them and, in what promises to be a low-scoring encounter given under 2.5 goals has copped in seven of their last nine meetings, a draw represents the value.

Goal after 76:59 – 5/6

Late drama has been the order of the day in Derby’s recent matches at Pride Park with a goal scored after the 77th minute in their last nine home league games.

Derby have had a habit of finishing matches strongly and, with a tight encounter expected, a late strike could be what is needed for them to record a positive result.

In Derby’s last four home league games, they have struck winners after 90, 81 and 93 minutes while Shrewsbury equalised in the 87th minute in their 1-1 draw earlier this month.

So the late-scoring trend may continue against Charlton, who have netted three of their last five goals in the second half of matches.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to score at any time - 9/4

Those looking for a goalscorer punt could do worse than backing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to get on the scoresheet, just as he did in the reverse fixture earlier this month.

Mendez-Laing netted the only goal of the game as Derby edged past Charlton 1-0 at The Valley and he is enjoying a fine season, having scored eight goals and grabbed 12 assists from 34 appearances this term.

With leading scorer James Collins having missed the last two games through injury, Mendez-Laing has been getting the nod in attack for Derby and he could reward that faith placed in him by Warne with a ninth goal of the campaign.
