Crystal Palace v Manchester City: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Manchester City were in the mood on Wednesday night as they crushed Aston Villa 4-1 even without some of their superstars – and Crystal Palace will know they are in for a tough test against Pep Guardiola’s champions on Saturday.

Manchester City & Over 2.5 Goals - 10/11

The Manchester City bandwagon, temporarily halted first by Liverpool and then Arsenal, is back on the road.

Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing of fourth-placed Aston Villa was a statement show of strength from Pep Guardiola’s champions, who will have been disappointed not to have managed at least one win from their showdowns with their title adversaries.

At this stage of the season, and with fixtures against their major rivals out of the way, City will expect to keep on winning to keep the pressure on at the top and it’s something they have proven to be rather good at in previous campaigns.

And while many managers moan about the fixture schedule around Easter, Guardiola was actually able to give John Stones, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland the night off on Wednesday so all three can start fresh at Selhurst Park.

City have had the odd issue with Palace recently. Of their five past meetings, the Citizens have failed to win three, including earlier this season at the Etihad when they blew a 2-0 lead in a match that finished 2-2.

Last season at Selhurst Park they needed a late Haaland penalty to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win, and while the Eagles are struggling – and not totally out of the relegation woods – they will be obdurate.

And it’s hard to know yet quite what to make of Palace under Oliver Glasner. The Austrian has had five games in charge, winning 3-0 against a Burnley side who were down to ten men early, drawing 1-1 against both Nottingham Forest and Luton and losing at Tottenham and Bournemouth.

The fans seem to like him and he promises positivity, though interestingly – and it’s an admittedly small sample – they are averaging 10.1 shots per game under him, less than under Roy Hodgson. In the loss at Bournemouth they mustered just three efforts on goal.

Like all Palace bosses he needs to have Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise fit and firing and he might just this weekend, although England international defender Marc Guehi will be missing at the back.

This will be all about City and what they do with the ball and how many of the abundant chances they create they can take. But Palace, with a 3-4-3 set-up that encourages bags of width, would hope to profit in the holes at the back that the visitors do leave.

So expect goals – but also a City win.

Eberechi Eze Over 0.5 Shots on Target - 11/10

Palace will need to put in a defensive masterclass if they are to get anything off City, but they know they will also get the odd opportunity themselves.

City do give up chances – even in their thoroughly one-sided dismantling of Villa, Unai Emery’s men had eight shots, three of which were on target.

Palace have the pace to hurt City on the break and a player in Eze whose free-kick skills almost always make him a danger.

Eze has scored only six goals in yet another injury-troubled campaign, but he leads Palace’s shots-per-game table with 2.9 and he looks a fair price to steer one on target against the champions.

Jordan Ayew to be booked - 3/1

The defensive duties of Palace’s frontmen will be crucial as they attempt to disrupt City and Jordan Ayew takes that role seriously.

Ayew has committed more fouls than any other Palace player this season and has been shown seven yellow cards in 27 starts for his troubles.

Holding up City at source will be important and Ayew looks a prime candidate to enter referee Paul Tierney's notebook.
