Crystal Palace v Burnley tips and predictions

Draw @ 5/2

Oliver Glasner watched from the stands as his new Palace team battled for a point at Everton on Monday night and the Austrian may well witness the same outcome on Saturday against Burnley, this time from the technical area.

The Eagles are odds-on to make it a winning start for Glasner, who was doubtless quite pleased with his new side’s effort at Goodison Park.

Quite how much of a role Glasner had in team selection or set-up isn’t clear but Paddy McCarthy, in charge for the night, deployed a 3-4-3 formation which mirrored a similar tactic the incoming Austrian preferred back in the day at Eintracht Frankfurt.

There were occasional threats in the 1-1 draw but not enough encouragement to presume Palace will sweep away a Burnley side fighting for their lives.

What he will have concluded is that he needs Michael Olise and Ebe Eze back pronto and they won’t be involved at Selhurst Park this weekend.

Palace’s home form under Roy Hodgson had been pretty poor - just three wins and 12 points from a possible 36. They have only scored 15 goals at home - indeed scoring goals home and away is a problem for the London side, just as it is Burnley.

That’s why this game will doubtless be tight - the stakes are huge - and quite possibly low-scoring, and in that case the draw becomes a big player.

Burnley travel south on the back of a predictable and painful blank from their double header with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Indeed, since their last win, 2-0 at Fulham before Christmas, they have played seven top-flight games, five of them against current top-four sides. They lost the lot.

In the other two games, however, they have drawn 1-1 with Luton and 2-2 with Fulham and are clearly quite capable of emulating that sort of result at Selhurst Park.

Burnley First Goal Time Before 73:00 @ 5/6

Burnley have found the net in 16 of the 25 Premier League matches in which they have played this season and in 15 of those their first goal was scored before the 73rd minute.

Statistically at least, a Burnley goal before then makes sense as a bet. Palace, incidentally, have conceded before the 73rd minute on 16 occasions.

This is the stage of the season when Vincent Kompany knows he needs to be more positive - 0-0 draws at somewhere like Selhurst Park is not a ticket to survival.

On recent trips to Villa, Liverpool and Manchester City they found the net so they are clearly capable.

David Fofana, while not free-scoring, has pepped up their attack and they should be confident they can breach a home defence which looks far less secure with Joel Ward as one of three central defenders rather than Marc Guehi, currently struggling with injury.

Over 5.5 Crystal Palace corners @ 5/6

Intent will be everything from Palace this weekend as players and new manager combine to throw everything at getting the win.

Glasner is under pressure from the off with the Eagles just five points clear of danger.

They were positive playing on the counter at Goodison Park on Monday in the 1-1 draw against Everton. They only had 37 percent of the ball but when they did have it they attacked in numbers and brightly earning six corners over the course of 90 minutes.

They average 5.1 corners for every home game and Burnley concede an average of 7.3 corners in every away game.

With Glasner setting the home side to attack wide and hunt the by-line, they can easily clear the 5.5 corners mark.
