Purchased from Atalanta in 2021, Romero has evolved into a formidable defender under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, but his injury absences have been a major contributing factor to Tottenham's weak defensive resolve.

The 27-year-old has missed the bulk of the 2024/25 season with a hamstring issue and Romero's unavailability coincided with Micky van de Ven's prolonged spell on the sidelines, resulting in Postecoglou improvising with a makeshift centre-back partnership during spells of the season.

Tottenham will be desperate to retain Romero, and qualification for the UEFA Champions League through UEFA Europa League triumph may have helped their cause, now favourites to retain the defender.

The two Madrid giants are reportedly eying up, with Atletico and Real both understood to be considering moves for Romero, who is contracted to Spurs until 2027.

A centre-back is high on the agenda for incoming Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, while according to reports in Spain, Atletico manager Diego Simeone has a mighty war chest he can delve into during the transfer window.

Rumours had emerged that Premier League champions Liverpool were keen on introducing the Argentine, and they have shortened in the betting odds in recent days.
