Crewe Alexandra v Notts County: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Notts County have made an excellent start to the League Two season, losing only twice in 15 matches to find themselves sitting third, and they will be hoping that they can maintain that form away at fellow highfliers Crewe Alexandra.

The Magpies were happy enough to draw 1-1 at fourth-placed Doncaster last Saturday, which stretched their unbeaten run in the league to five, and it may be a similar scenario against Crewe, who are fifth and going extremely well on home soil.

The Railwaymen have lost only one of their last 12 and they have been in excellent touch at the Mornflake Stadium, where they have won four of their last five.

Although still early on in the fourth-tier campaign, this fixture could have a big bearing on the promotion picture and neither team will want to give an inch to another in-form rival.

Draw - 12/5

Matches involving promotion protagonists tend to be nervy affairs and a share of the spoils would arguably be a positive result for both parties.

After a slow start, Crewe are back operating at the peak of their powers and they have been particularly successful on home soil, having taken 14 points from their last six matches on their own patch.

That six-game sequence has featured four wins and two draws and their only defeat since the middle of August came in a 2-1 reverse at Newport at the end of September.

Confidence should, therefore, be at an all-time high and they have every right to believe that they can stretch their unbeaten sequence to seven against third-placed Notts County.

However, the Magpies are two points above Crewe in the League Two table and should also be full of belief, with their only defeat in eight coming at home to table-topping Port Vale.

Notts County boast one of the meanest defences in League Two, having shipped only 13 goals in 15 outings, while Crewe have kept five clean sheets in their last 10 and are now defending resolutely.

So there is a strong case for suggesting a draw may be overpriced and three of Crewe’s last five league matches have ended all-square, which includes a 1-1 stalemate at second-placed Walsall last time out.

Notts County, meanwhile, have finished level in four of their last five away trips and they may have to settle for another point in Cheshire.

David McGoldrick to score at anytime - 21/10

Notts County will have to do without the services of their leading scorer Alassana Jatta, who has been called up to represent The Gambia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, so the pressure will be on David McGoldrick to hold the fort in his absence.

The former Premier League star is only one goal behind Jatta in the League Two scoring charts, having netted six times in 12 outings, and he has scored in their last two away games at Chesterfield and Barrow.

McGoldrick is also on penalty duty for Notts County, which enhances his scoring prospects, and he looks a big price to get on the scoresheet at 21/10.

Over 10 corners - 1/1

Corners have been high on the agenda for both Crewe and Notts County this season and, combining their attacking quality with their defensive robustness, this showdown should prove no different.

Notts County’s away league games this season are averaging a league-high 11.63 corners per outing while Crewe’s home league fixtures are averaging 10.86.

When these two last locked horns in February, a contest Crewe won 3-1, there were 13 corners and there is every hope that their newest rivalry could follow a similar narrative.
