Crewe Alexandra v AFC Wimbledon: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Just two points separate second-placed Crewe Alexandra and fifth-placed AFC Wimbledon in the League Two standings and Tuesday’s clash could have huge ramifications on the battle to secure promotion.

Crewe have played two matches more than AFC Wimbledon and they will be desperate to hit back from Saturday’s shock 1-0 loss at home to Accrington, who belied their lowly position to surprise the Mornflake Stadium.

AFC Wimbledon, meanwhile, stretched their league unbeaten run to five with a hard-fought goalless draw at rivals MK Dons and they boast the meanest defence in the division, with only 19 goals conceded in 25 matches.

With the Railwaymen having also kept four clean sheets in their last nine league matches, defences may dominate this contest and it could take a moment of individual brilliance in order for the high-flying duo to be separated.

Crewe trail runaway leaders Walsall by 12 points and they are 2/1 to finish the season with promotion while AFC Wimbledon, having played two games fewer yet only two points back, are Evs to make their League One return.

Crewe Alexandra v AFC Wimbledon betting tips and predictions

Draw - 19/10

The last four League Two meetings between these two sides have ended in draws and there is every possibility of this latest rivalry following suit.

A point would arguably be a decent result for both sides in their pursuit of automatic promotion and the low-scoring trend of AFC Wimbledon’s matches makes that a highly likely outcome.

The Wombles have seen two or fewer goals scored in eight of their last 11 league meetings and defensively they are extremely robust, with only 19 goals conceded in 25 matches and they have kept 12 clean sheets.

Crewe, meanwhile, have kept four shut outs in their last nine league games and the pair may cancel one another out in what is a fixture of high stakes.

The Railwaymen have drawn 10 of their 27 of their League Two matches, a tally bettered only by Bromley and Colchester in the fourth tier, and they have suffered defeat in only one of their last 12 at home.

That may make them difficult to pass but AFC Wimbledon have lost only one of their last 10 league matches and are equally resolute.

So with a low-scoring game likely - under 2.5 goals is a 1/2 shot - there may be plenty of value in backing the draw at 19/10.

Mathew Stevens first goalscorer - 13/2

In a game likely to be decided by fine margins, AFC Wimbledon striker Mathew Stevens could prove to be the difference maker.

After unsuccessful loan spells at Stevenage and Walsall, Stevens has found his home at AFC Wimbledon and he is the joint-second highest scorer in the division with 13 goals in 25 appearances.

The 26-year-old has seven goals in his last 12 appearances and he has scored four of the Wombles’ last eight goals in League Two, showing his importance to the club in their pursuit of promotion.

Stevens is an extremely clinical finisher who has a habit of being in the right place at the right time and he will be looking to pounce on any mistakes of Crewe, who were well below par in their latest 1-0 loss at home to 20th-placed Accrington.
