Coventry City v Maidstone Utd: Tips, Predictions and Odds

The FA Cup fifth round gets underway on Monday night with the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, Maidstone, travelling to Championship Coventry, where they will be hoping to pull off another giantkilling.

It has already been a miraculous run for National League South Maidstone, who have won seven ties to reach the last 16, becoming the first club from outside the top five divisions to make it through to the fifth round since Blyth Spartans in 1978.

The highlight of that run was their 2-1 victory at Championship high-flyers Ipswich in the fourth round, a memorable result that has set up this trip to another promotion hopeful from the second tier.

Coventry are very much in the play-off picture in the Championship, but they will head into this game having been comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Preston on Friday night, hardly the ideal preparation for this potential cup banana skin.

The Sky Blues also know all about being on the receiving end of a cup shock, as they were eliminated by then non-league Sutton United in the third round in 1989, just two years on from lifting the trophy themselves.

Maidstone may take inspiration from Sutton's exploits 35 years ago, but with four divisions between these two sides in the pyramid, Coventry will rightfully start this match as heavy favourites.

Coventry v Maidstone betting tips and predictions

Coventry and both teams to score - 13/10

Despite the disappointing nature of Friday's defeat to Preston, Coventry have been in decent form, losing just one of their previous 17 games prior to their dismal effort against the Lilywhites.

That run includes progress in the FA Cup at the expense of Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday, needing a replay to see off the latter, but scoring an eye-watering 11 goals across those three games.

However, City have also conceded in all three of those matches, which has been a familiar theme for Mark Robins' side of late, as they have failed to keep a clean-sheet in 12 of their last 13 games across all competitions.

That will give Maidstone hope heading into Monday's clash and George Elokobi's side are more than capable of getting on the scoresheet, but pulling off another cup shock may be beyond them.

The Stones have already seen off three league sides en route to round five, getting the better of Barrow, Stevenage and of course Ipswich, scoring five goals in the process.

It has been a memorable run for Maidstone, but their cup exploits may be starting to take their toll, as they have taken just one point from their last two games to fall off the pace in the National League South promotion race.

That mini-slump could be because they have had one eye on this cup clash and they are sure to contribute to an enthralling tie, but Coventry's extra quality should tell in the end.

Callum O'Hare anytime scorer - 6/5

Coventry made a slow start to the season, but their form has improved since October, which coincided with the return to fitness of attacking midfielder Callum O'Hare, who has hit the ground running after spending 10 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

He has scored nine goals and provided four assists since his return, netting three times in this cup run, including a brace in the fourth-round replay success over Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena.

Once Friday's game against Preston had gone - Coventry were 3-0 down after 38 minutes - O'Hare was replaced, with boss Robins perhaps having one eye on this cup tie.

The 25-year-old has started two of Coventry's three matches in this season's FA Cup and will expect to be included in the XI again - if he is then the 6/5 about him scoring anytime has to represent good value.

O'Hare underlined his eye for a goal with his double against Sheff Wed and if Coventry go on to win this game by a hefty margin, then the former Aston Villa youngster could be worth considering, at 6/1, to notch two or more goals.
