A slow start to the Premier League season has brought Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou under some scrutiny, so he will be extremely keen to ease that pressure by landing an EFL Cup win at Coventry City on Wednesday.
A visit to Coventry is not the easiest task and a comfortable win may not be simple to achieve, but the Sky Blues have also endured a disappointing start to the campaign and Spurs should have too much for their Championship hosts.
Tottenham to win and both teams to score @ 15/8
Motivation will be high for Spurs to please their fans after a 1-0 defeat to their bitter rivals on Sunday, especially as it was a great chance for the Lilywhites to get one over their enemies.
The Gunners were without their first-choice midfield trio of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino yet Spurs still couldn’t find a way through.
Postecoglou is not known to hide his feelings and it would be no surprise to see a fired-up Spurs side at the Coventry Building Society Arena as the Australian looks for a reaction from his players.
With this being a cup tie, rotation can be expected from Tottenham and the likes of Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner will be looking to impress as they bid to start in the Premier League.
That motivated approach from the players and the quality Spurs possess should see them overpower their second-tier hosts and they have a strong record against lower-league opposition in this competition, winning seven of their nine matches against sides outside the Premier League in the League Cup – never losing at home in that run.
They may have taken only four points from the first 12 available in the Premier League, but the Lilywhites are still a European side in top-four contention again and should have too much for the Sky Blues, who have won only three of their last 14 matches.
However, Coventry have netted 21 goals in their last 11 home games and given they put three past Wolves in an FA Cup quarter-final at Molineux last season, it could pay to back them to breach Premier League opposition again.
Ellis Simms to score any time @ 15/4
If Coventry are to score, it seems likely that Ellis Simms will be the man to grab the goal.
The Sky Blues forward netted the winner in their round-one victory over Bristol City and he is proving to have an affinity for the cup competitions, enjoying a sensational run in the FA Cup last term.
Simms netted six goals in as many games in the FA Cup last season and given each of those strikes came from the last-16 onwards, he clearly has a tendency to step up in the biggest matches.
Mark Robins may make some changes for this cup tie, but he will be keen to please the fans given the Sky Blues’ slow start to the league season, so dropping his star striker is unlikely to be in his mind ahead of this clash.
Spurs’ defence is far from watertight, managing just two clean sheets in their last 15 matches, and Simms looks a good bet to test them on Wednesday.
Luis Binks to be booked @ 13/5
City defender Luis Binks was dropped to the bench for their draw at Watford on Saturday despite performing well in the opening weeks of the campaign.
However, his fellow defender Joel Latibeaudiere was forced off in that clash, meaning Binks should regain his place in the back three, which will please yellow card backers.
The 23-year-old has been booked three times in his four Championship appearances this term and up against Premier League opposition, he may be forced into a few careless fouls.
Should Werner start for Spurs, his pace could cause Binks all sorts of problems, while his fellow attackers Heung-Min Son and Dominic Solanke are also tricky customers, making the Coventry defender’s price for a booking one worth taking.
