Aston Villa lead the way at the top of the league phase standings with three wins in as many UEFA Champions League games so far ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Club Brugge.
Villa have beaten Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna without conceding a goal but they are coming into the game on the back of their first away loss of the season against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.
Brugge have endured a mixed start to their own UEFA Champions League campaign with three points from as many games.
The Belgian side managed to claim a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sturm Graz, but found AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund too much to cope with.
They are currently in the elimination places, but with just three rounds of games played they remain firmly in the mix for a knockout spot.
Aston Villa to win - 23/20
Villa went down 4-1 at Tottenham over the weekend as they suffered their first away defeat of the campaign, but the scoreline doesn’t paint an accurate picture of the game overall.
Unai Emery’s men held a deserved 1-0 lead at the interval before Spurs responded well after the break and then scored twice late on when Villa were chasing the game.
Prior to that defeat, the Villans had won five of their opening six away games across all competitions, with one draw, including a comprehensive 3-0 win at Young Boys in their only UEFA Champions League trip so far.
Club Brugge should provide a test, but one that Villa are capable of passing. The Belgian champions sit in second place in their domestic league, but they have still lost three of their opening 13 games, and they’ve been outclassed in two of their three European games.
The hosts have lost 3-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund and 3-1 at AC Milan in this competition already.
Villa may not be quite at the same level as last season’s runners-up and the Italian heavyweights, particularly when it comes to European nous, but their win over Bayern suggests they could be a serious threat in the UEFA Champions League this season.
They surely have enough quality to maintain their perfect start by making it four wins from as many games when they travel to the Jan Breydel Stadion on Wednesday.
Andreas Skov Olsen over 0.5 shots on target - 10/11
If you’re putting together a bet builder for this early kick-off on Wednesday, a few home players are worth a mention in the shots on target market and at 10/11 Denmark international Andreas Skov Olsen looks a great candidate to at least test Emiliano Martinez in the visiting goal.
The 24-year-old has five goals in 12 games in Belgium’s top tier this season, including the only goal of the game in Brugge’s win over Leuven at the weekend, while he is his side’s top scorer in that competition.
Skov Olsen hasn’t managed a UEFA Champions League goal yet but he has had plenty of chances.
The Dane had three attempts in Brugge’s defeat to Dortmund, their only home game so far in Europe, and two of those were on target.
Overall, the former Bologna man is averaging 0.7 attempts on target per-game in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Morgan Rogers to score anytime - 13/5
Villa star Ollie Watkins is yet to get off the mark in this competition and he’s coming into this game on the back of an abject personal performance at Tottenham.
Jhon Duran is the Premier League side’s leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League but isn’t a guaranteed starter, so Morgan Rogers looks the standout scorer bet among the visitors’ squad.
Rogers has played every minute in Europe for Villa this term and has three goals in his last seven games for his club across all competitions.
The players who have caused Brugge the most problems this season have played in similar roles to Rogers. Tijjani Reijnders scored twice against the Belgians for Milan in the last round of fixtures, while Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens netted a brace against them after coming off the bench.
Rogers is coming into this game in form and as a 13/5 chance looks good value to open his UEFA Champions League account after registering an assist in the 2-0 win over Bologna last time out.
