Chelsea v Manchester United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Under-fire bosses Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag go head-to-head in a clash between two of this season’s Premier League under-achievers at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United’s top-four dream is all but in tatters while Chelsea are struggling to even finish in the top half.

Chelsea v Manchester United betting tips and predictions

Both teams to score in second half - 5/4

Two of the least trustworthy sides in the Premier League go head to head at Stamford Bridge where it’s easier to make a case against both sides rather than one for them.

The free-scoring Blues haven’t failed to find the net in a league game since the end of October - but have managed just one clean sheet since Christmas.

United are sixth in the table, but the lowest scorers in the top 13 and even the likes of Bournemouth and Luton have scored more goals on their travels than Ten Hag’s side.

At the prices, and given the lack of consistency from either team, you could argue the 13/5 United has to be more appealing than the 19/20 about Chelsea.

United haven’t lost to Chelsea in any of their last 12 league encounters - but seven of those matches have ended in draws. The draw is a 3/1 chance.

Against the draw, of course, is the likelihood of goals; neither of these teams can keep clean sheets. Never mind 2.5, each of Chelsea’s last five matches have produced over 3.5 goals culminating in Saturday’s dreadful 2-2 draw with Burnley, who played with 10 men for around an hour. Both teams have scored in 19 of the Blues’ 28 league matches.

United’s games are generally less goal-laden, though 18 of their league matches have produced three goals or more.

Both teams to score in the second half at 5/4 looks a definite value bet given that the second half of Chelsea’s matches are averaging 2.1 goals per time and United’s 1.6.

The abundance of added time is clearly a factor in the high second-half goal returns, but it’s a noticeable trend that Premier League games just seem to get more and more frantic as the clock ticks down.

Sides like the current Chelsea and United ones are simply terrible at managing games, as evidenced at the weekend. Chelsea twice led 10-man Burnley and were twice pegged back while United survived an absolute onslaught from Brentford, stole a 93rd minute lead, yet still couldn’t hold on, as game ended 1-1.

Cole Palmer first scorer - 11/2

In amongst the ordinariness that pervades Pochetino’s ranks, a shining light this season has been Cole Palmer.

Two more goals at the weekend have taken the England forward to 13 in the league this season and he looks a threat whenever he gets on the ball.

Palmer notionally plays off the right but will drift into the middle and is the go-to man through which all of Chelsea’s best attacking work comes.

He also takes penalties, always an advantage these days when considering a first-scorer bet.

Palmer has bagged 18 goals this season and against a United defence once again ravaged by injury with Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof joining Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia on the sidelines, the 21-year-old is taken at 11/2 to open the scoring.

Bruno Fernandes to be booked - 21/10

Chelsea frontman Nicolas Jackson, just one yellow card away from a two-game ban, continues to behave himself having picked up his ninth and most recent caution eight games ago.

Bruno Fernandes is a booking behind the Senegalese striker but this is the sort of game where the scowling schemer can collect yellow number nine.

Fernandes has had a far less influential season than United fans would have been hoped but when it comes to incurring the wrath of referees, he remains better than most.

For the first time since in his Udinese days in 2015/16, the Portuguese star is set to go through a season having accrued more cards than goals with 11 yellows and eight goals to his name so far. He’s 3/1 to score and 21/10 to get booked and it’s the latter which appeals more.
