EFL Cup Final - Chelsea v Liverpool: Tips, Predictions and Odds

The first major domestic competition of the 2023/24 English season concludes at Wembley on Sunday and the Racing Post’s Dan Childs has picked out his three best bets for the contest.

Liverpool cemented top spot in the Premier League with a come-from-behind 4-1 success at home to Luton on Wednesday and will be keen to cap off the perfect week by winning at Wembley.

The Reds are the most successful team in EFL Cup history with nine wins, four of which have come since the turn of the Millennium.

Chelsea have not lifted the trophy since a 2-0 success over Tottenham in the 2015 final.

They finished runners-up in 2019 and 2022 following penalty shootout losses to Manchester City and Liverpool after both matches had finished goalless.

However, Chelsea have a fantastic pedigree in the EFL Cup, landing the trophy on five occasions, and they are sure to give Liverpool a tough test under the famous arch.

Dan Childs’s EFL Cup final tips and predictions

Chelsea to lift the trophy @ 13/10

Chelsea are going through another frustrating season in the Premier League but they have excelled in the knockout competitions and should fancy their chances of defeating injury-hit Liverpool at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side warmed up with a gutsy 1-1 draw at Manchester City last Saturday, which must have given them the belief that they are moving in the right direction.

The Blues offered a serious threat to City on counter-attacks and defended manfully despite Thiago Silva’s absence from the side.

Silva is expected to feature at Wembley and his experience could be vital in guiding the younger Chelsea players through such a high-stakes occasion.

Liverpool should anticipate a tough challenge and they are going to be far from full strength.

Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones are among the certain absentees and there are doubts over Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai, who missed the 4-1 win over Luton.

Given the injury problems affecting Liverpool, it is hard to fancy them as favourites to emerge victorious.

Chelsea are 13/10 to lift the trophy and that looks excellent value given their tendency to rise to the big occasions.

The Blues have drawn twice with Manchester City in the Premier League and they have held Liverpool (1-1) and Arsenal (2-2) at Stamford Bridge.

They have been too inconsistent to mount a challenge for a top-four finish but are capable of competing with the top teams on any given day and can enjoy a triumphant weekend.

Under 1.5 Liverpool goals @ 5/6

Liverpool have been free-scoring in the Premier League, netting 63 goals in 26 matches, but injuries to their front line could affect their ability to hurt Chelsea.

An understrength Liverpool side blitzed Luton on Wednesday but the Reds are facing a tougher challenge against Chelsea, who resisted superbly for large parts of last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

Liverpool were 4-1 winners at home to Chelsea last month but they have often struggled to break down the Blues rearguard.

The Reds have scored less than two goals in seven of their last nine meetings with Chelsea, so a wager on them to score under 1.5 goals at Wembley is worth considering at 5/6.

Raheem Sterling to score any time @ 10/3

Raheem Sterling returned to haunt Manchester City last Saturday by scoring in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad and he will be eager to make an impact against another former employer, Liverpool, at Wembley.

Sterling has had a mixed season but he took his goal superbly at the Etihad and will pose a major threat to Liverpool.

The 29-year-old will be feeling confident and he looks an overpriced 10/3 shot to get on the scoresheet.
