Charlton Athletic will be hopeful they can bounce back from last week’s defeat at Reading by maintaining their nine-league-match unbeaten home run against Rotherham United on Saturday.

The Millers head to south-east London with a miserable away record but were nevertheless boosted last week by a home win over fellow Yorkshire outfit Huddersfield.

Charlton have gone through some troubled years off the pitch, but there are signs that things are improving under Nathan Jones and the Addicks look strong challengers for a promotion push in League One this season.

They won their first three games of the season but will have to pick themselves up after their 2-0 defeat at Reading last week, when Rotherham head to The Valley on Saturday.

Jones’s side have already beaten Leyton Orient and Bolton at home without conceding and are playing their most effective football since Lee Bowyer took them to play-off glory five years ago. They should prove too strong for the Millers, who have not won any of their last eight games against the Londoners.

Rotherham endured the misery of relegation from the Championship last season and you have to go back to November 2022 to find the last time they claimed an away victory.

Steve Evans is back at the club hoping to galvanise their efforts and they could take a great deal of confidence from a 2-1 home win over Huddersfield, who were considered among the favourites for promotion at the start of the season.

However, their travel problems have continued as they have fallen to defeats at Wycombe and Exeter without scoring and early-season indications suggest this could prove to be an even more difficult assignment, so take the Addicks to claim their fourth league win of the campaign.

Charlton have kept clean sheets in their two home league games this season and in their 1-0 win at Wigan, and while there have been strong performances under Jones, they have not looked likely to run riot, so there may not be many goals in Saturday’s match.

Each of their last eight matches have featured fewer than three goals and their solidity on their own patch suggests that one or two goals might be enough to gain three points at the Millers’ expense.

Rotherham fell to a 2-1 loss in the League Cup to League Two Fleetwood and that at least ended a run of eight road matches without a goal, but the Yorkshire side can hardly be regarded as prolific when they are on their travels.

It seems unlikely that an open game with a host of goals is going to emerge, just like many of Charlton’s outings under their latest manager.

The onus will be on Charlton to push forward and they are a team who like to get their full-backs overlapping and getting crosses in from out wide.

That means they could force plenty of corners, just as they did when they had nine in their 1-0 win over Orient in their first home game of the campaign.

They mustered just three in their subsequent Valley success over Bolton, but as they had five in defeat at Reading last week and six when they beat Wigan on the opening day, there looks a decent chance they can get more than five flag-kicks in Saturday’s game.
